''Mehed ei nuta'' (Estonian for ''Men Don't Cry'') is a 1969 Estonian television comedy movie directed by Sulev Nõmmik and written by himself and Enn Vetemaa. Influence Together with ''Viimne reliikvia'', '' Siin me oleme!'' and '' Noor pensionär'', ''Mehed ei nuta'' is one of the most culturally influential movies of the Soviet era in Estonia. Particularly memorable is the character of a hypochondriac protagonist, played by Ervin Abel. Plot A group of people suffering from sleeplessness are, under the guise of a resort, moved to a peninsula and subjected to work therapy. When they realise the deception, they attempt to leave the fake resort, with hilarious consequences. Sulev Nõmmik
Sulev Nõmmik (11 January 1931, in Tallinn – 28 July 1992, in Kuressaare) was an Estonian theatre and movie director, actor, humorist and comedian. He's mostly associated with the comical character of Kärna Ärni and the related fictional village of Uduvere (roughly translated as ''Foggyshire''), but he was also influential in writing scripts for several well-known movies, including '' Mehed ei nuta'', '' Siin me oleme!'' and '' Noor pensionär''. Helmut Vaag (born Arthur-Helmuth Vaag; 29 May 1911 Juuru Parish – 8 July 1978 Tallinn) was an Estonian actor and director. 1927-1931 he studied at Tallinna Töölisteater's studying studio. 1933–1940 he was an actor at Tallinn Töölisteater, 1940–1951 and 1961–1975 at Estonian Drama Theatre, 1952–1953 at Estonian Puppet Theatre. 1952–1961 he was an estrade actor at Estonian SSR State Philharmonic (nowadays Eesti Kontsert). Leo Normet (17 September 1922 Pärnu – 27 December 1995 Tallinn) was an Estonian composer, musicologist. In 1950, he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in composition speciality. Since 1954, he taught music history at Tallinn State Conservatory (since 1991 the professor). As a musicologist, he was focused on Jean Sibelius' legacy. Sophie Sooäär (27 September 1914 – 14 March 1996) was an Estonian stage, television, and film actress and singer and dancer. Early life and education Sophie Sooäär (occasionally credited as Sofie Sooäär) was born in Pärnu in 1914. She attended schools in Pärnu, graduating from secondary school in 1931; afterward, she studied dressmaking until 1934. Stage career In 1934, Sooäär began an engagement at the Endla Theatre in her hometown of Pärnu as an actress and dancer. From 1941 until 1944 she performed as a soloist at the theatre. In 1944, she joined the Estonia Theatre in Tallinn as a soloist.
