Medford School District (Oregon)
Medford School District (549C) is a school district in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is the largest school district of southern Oregon. The district is bordered directly to the north by the Central Point School District and on the south by the Phoenix-Talent School District. (Other nearby districts include the Ashland School District, Grants Pass School District, and Klamath Falls City School District). Today, district 549C encompasses 14 primary schools, two secondary schools, and three high schools in three cities: Medford, Jacksonville, and Ruch. As of 2018, district enrollment stood at 13,981 students. The Medford School District passed a school bond in November 2006 that collected $189 million to completely rebuild South Medford High School and Lone Pine Elementary School. Medford, Oregon
Medford is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Oregon, in the United States. As of the 2020 United States Census on April 1, 2020, the city had a total population of 85,824 and a metropolitan area population of 223,259, making the Medford MSA the fourth largest metro area in Oregon. The city was named in 1883 by David Loring, civil engineer and right-of-way agent for the Oregon and California Railroad, after Medford, Massachusetts, which was near Loring's hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. Medford is near the middle ford of Bear Creek. History In 1883, a group of railroad surveyors headed by S. L. Dolson and David Loring arrived in Rock Point, near present-day Gold Hill. The ''Mail Tribune'' is a seven-day daily newspaper based in Medford, Oregon, United States that serves Jackson County, Oregon, and adjacent areas of Josephine County, Oregon and northern California. Its coverage area centers on Medford and Ashland and includes many small communities in Jackson County. The newspaper also covers Central Point, Talent, Eagle Point, Grants Pass and Phoenix, as well as Jacksonville and other cities in the Rogue Valley. History George Putnam bought the ''Medford Tribune'' and two smaller weekly newspapers on April 2, 1907. Spiegelberg Stadium
Spiegelberg Stadium, sometimes called Spieg, is a multipurpose sports stadium in the northwest United States, located in Medford, Oregon. Known as Medford Stadium until 1983, it is the home venue for both the North Medford High School and South Medford High School football programs. At capacity, Spiegelberg holds nearly 10,000 spectators in its home and away grandstands, both of which are covered. It is a unique high school football venue in the state of Oregon. The 3A football program from nearby St. Mary's High School also uses Spiegelberg for home games, held on Saturday to avoid conflict with the larger schools contests. South Medford High School
South Medford High School is a public high school in Medford, Oregon, United States. History The South Medford campus was originally built in 1931 as Medford High School. Then in the 1960s, the school was divided between two campuses. Medford High became Medford Mid High, serving grades 9 and 10, with grades 11 and 12 going to a newly constructed campus, known as Medford Senior High, which is the current North Medford High School campus. This system was primarily used to allow Medford's football team to compete against schools in large cities such as Portland. The Panther mascot and school colors were chosen by a 1985 vote of the students in the 549-C school district. Panthers won out over Cyclones and Lions among other choices. The school colors were originally "Blue and Silver-Grey". The campus was also home to Spiegelberg Stadium (9,250 seat capacity). North Medford High School is a public high school in Medford, Oregon, United States. It is part of Medford School District, and its nickname is the Black Tornado. The school enrolls 1,750 students. History Originally the City of Medford had a single high school, Medford High School, constructed in the 1920s. In the 1960s, the school district expanded, constructing a new high school on the opposite side of the city. Rather than develop this into an independent school, the district kept Medford High School as the lone school, with students attending at the two different locations. Central Medford High School (formerly Medford Opportunity High School) is a public alternative high school in Medford, Oregon, United States. In 2010 the school moved from its original location on Earhart Street to a new location on Oakdale Avenue in Medford. It occupied part of the old South Medford High School (which is now located on Cunningham Avenue in Medford).
