Meadowlands, South Africa
Meadowlands is a suburb of Soweto, Gauteng Province, South Africa. It was founded in the early 1950s during the apartheid era for black residents from Sophiatown. History Meadowlands also known as Ndofaya has its origin with the introduction of the '' Natives Resettlement Act, Act No 19 of 1954'' with its aim to move black people out of the centre of Johannesburg from multi-cultural areas such as Sophiatown and the Western Native Townships. The Urban Resettlement Board was created and the forced removals began on 10 February 1955 and would continue until the mid-sixties when most of the new township had been completed. Early residents were separated into new zones of the township based on their ethnic background and identifiable by the street names. The River (South African TV Series)
''The River'' is a South African telenovela created by Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon. It is an M-Net original production produced by Tshedza Pictures for DStv's general entertainment subscription channel 1Magic and is available for streaming on Naspers' subscription-based video-on-demand service Showmax. Sindiswa Dlathu (born January 4, 1974) is a South African people, South African actress and musician. She is well known for portraying Thandaza Mokoena on ''Muvhango'', a role she played from the show's inception in 1997 until her departure in 2018. Dlathu left ''Muvhango'' to play a leading role in the telenovela The River (South African TV series), ''The River'', where she plays the role of Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana, a fierce woman, who would do anything to protect her wealth and maintain her lavish lifestyle. Zenzile Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 – 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist. Associated with musical genres including African popular music, Afropop, jazz, and world music, she was an advocate against apartheid and white-minority government in South Africa. Meadowlands (song)
"Meadowlands" was an anti-apartheid song composed in 1956 by Strike Vilakazi. It was written in reaction to the forced relocation of black South Africans from Sophiatown, to the new township of Meadowlands. The song was popularised by a number of musicians, including Dorothy Masuka and Miriam Makeba, and became an anthem of the movement against apartheid. Background The Afrikaner National Party (NP) was elected to power in South Africa in 1948, and remained in control of the government for the next 46 years. The white minority held all political power during this time, and implemented the system of apartheid. "Apartheid" involved a brutal system of racial segregation, and the word itself meant "separateness" in Afrikaans. Strike David Vilakazi (also written Vilakezi) was a South African vocalist, drummer, trumpeter, composer, and music producer. Diepkloof is a large zone of Soweto township in the Gauteng province of South Africa.
