McKenzie Corner, New Brunswick
McKenzie Corner is a rural community in New Brunswick, Canada. There are two churches in the settlement: McKenzie Corner Baptist Church, which features a cemetery, and St. John's United Church. The businessman and politician James Kidd Flemming lived in McKenzie Corner, where he died in 1927. History The settlement was once known as ''McKenzie's Corner'' and was named after William McKenzie, who settled in 1822. In 1866, McKenzie Corner was a farming settlement with around 140 families present. In 1871, it was a station on the New Brunswick and Canada Railway. In 1898, the population had increased to 150, and there was a post office, a cheese factory and two churches. The settlement Springbrook, in Hastings County, was once also known under the similar name ''McKenzie's Corners''. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) is an intergovernmental organisation of six independent member states whose principal function is to mark, record and maintain the graves and places of commemoration of Commonwealth of Nations military service members who died in the two World Wars. The commission is also responsible for commemorating Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action during the Second World War. The commission was founded by Fabian Ware, Sir Fabian Ware and constituted through Royal Charter in 1917 as the Imperial War Graves Commission. The change to the present name took place in 1960. The commission, as part of its mandate, is responsible for commemorating all Commonwealth war dead individually and equally. James Kidd Flemming
James Kidd Flemming (April 27, 1868 – February 10, 1927) was a businessman and politician in New Brunswick, Canada. Flemming was a school teacher and lumberman before entering politics and serving as Provincial Secretary-Treasurer from 1908 to 1911 and Minister of Lands and Mines from 1911 to 1914. He succeeded Douglas Hazen as the Premier of New Brunswick in 1911. In the June 1912 general election, Flemming led his provincial party to the biggest electoral victory in its history. In addition to two independent Conservative seats, the Conservative Party captured 42 of the province's 46 seats. Under Flemming, the French language was used for the first time in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. The ''Dictionary of Canadian Biography'' (''DCB''; french: Dictionnaire biographique du Canada) is a dictionary of biographical entries for individuals who have contributed to the history of Canada. The ''DCB'', which was initiated in 1959, is a collaboration between the University of Toronto and Laval University. Fifteen volumes have so far been published with more than 8,400 biographies of individuals who died or whose last known activity fell between the years 1000 and 1930. The New Brunswick Railway Company Limited (NBR) is currently a Canadian non-operating railway and land holding company headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick that is part of "Irving Transportation Services", a division within the J.D. Irving Limited (JDI) industrial conglomerate. It is not to be confused with another JDI company, New Brunswick Southern Railway (NBSR), established in 1995, which is an operational railway and considered a sister company of the NBR.
