McGonigle is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in northwestern Hanover Township, Butler County, Ohio, Hanover Township, Butler County, Ohio, Butler County, Ohio, United States about seven miles northwest of Hamilton, Ohio, Hamilton at the intersection of U.S. Route 27 and Ohio State Route 130, State Route 130 in sections 17 and 18 of R2ET4N of the Congress Lands. It was formerly a stop on the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway (1846–1917), Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad's Indianapolis branch. It was named for Philip McGonigle, an early settler, and is spelled in various ways (McGonigle is the spelling on the official Butler County highway map). Hanover Township is one of thirteen townships Butler County, Ohio, United States. It is located in the west-central part of the county, midway between Hamilton and Oxford. The population of the township was 8,111 at the 2020 census. It is named for Hanover County, Virginia, where the early settlers originated. State Route 130 (SR 130) is a short east–west state route in southwestern Ohio. The entirety of SR 130 lies within Butler County. SR 130 has its western terminus at a signalized intersection with U.S. Route 27 (US 27) in McGonigle. Its eastern terminus is also at a signalized intersection, this time at SR 177 in the extreme northwestern corner of Hamilton. For its entire length, SR 130 is alternately known as Old Oxford Road. The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway (CH&D) was a railroad based in the U.S. state of Ohio that existed between its incorporation on March 2, 1846, and its acquisition by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in December 1917. It was originally chartered to build from Cincinnati to Hamilton, Ohio, and then to Dayton, a distance of ; further construction and acquisition extended the railroad, and by 1902 it owned or controlled of railroad. Its stock and bond value plunged in late 1905 after "financial mismanagement of the properties" was revealed. The company was reorganized as the Toledo and Cincinnati Railroad in 1917.
