McCarty Memorial Christian Church
McCarty Memorial Christian Church is a Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) located at 4101 West Adams Boulevard in the historic West Adams, Los Angeles, California, West Adams district of Los Angeles, California. McCarty was founded in 1932 as a white congregation, and gained attention when it racial integration, integrated and became a multi-racial congregation in the mid-1950s. Architecture The church was built in 1932 in the English Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival style. Among the Church's notable features are stained glass windows with intricate Gothic tracery, arcade (architecture), arcaded ambulatory, ambulatories, and a 130-foot landmark tower with an elaborate open bell tower, belfry. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in January 2002. Three months later, McCarty was one of 18 Los Angeles structures to be awarded a "Preserve L.A." grant from the J. San Bernardino Mountains
The San Bernardino Mountains are a high and rugged mountain range in Southern California in the United States. Situated north and northeast of San Bernardino and spanning two California counties, the range tops out at at San Gorgonio Mountain – the tallest peak in all of Southern California. The San Bernardinos form a significant region of wilderness and are popular for hiking and skiing. The mountains were formed about eleven million years ago by tectonic activity along the San Andreas Fault, and are still actively rising. The ''Los Angeles Times'' wrote that he represented a "unique mixture of reform politics and xenophobic Protestant populism hattook him quite literally from the junk yard to City Hall." Porter was a member of the Ku Klux Klan during its popular resurgence in the early 1920s. Biography He was born on April 4, 1871, in Leon, Iowa to Reverend Josephus Clinton Porter and Mathilda Catherine Gardner. He served as the 33rd mayor of Los Angeles between 1929 and 1933 when he replaced George Edward Cryer. He survived a recall election in 1932. He ran for re-election twice more but was defeated in 1933 by Frank L. Shaw and in 1941 by Fletcher Bowron.
