The Mayor of the City of Saint John is the head of the elected municipal council of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Saint John Common Council consists of a mayor (chair) and 10 councillors. The city has a ward system with four of roughly equal population. This municipal arrangement was first adopted in the 2008 municipal election after a plebiscite held October 9, 2007. The mayor is directly elected along with two councillors that run at large. Since 2021, the deputy mayor has been chosen by Common Council after each election, having previously been the councillor at large who gained a plurality of votes. The current deputy mayor is John MacKenzie. Each ward elects two councillor. Since the incorporation of Saint John in 1785, the mayor has served as the chief representative of the city. 2021 New Brunswick Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held in the Canadian province of New Brunswick on May 10, 2021. They were originally supposed to be held May 11, 2020, but were postponed one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic in New Brunswick. Furthermore, elections in some municipalities in Northwestern New Brunswick will be held on May 25 due to those areas being under lockdown. Mel K. Norton is a Canadian politician, who served as mayor of Saint John, New Brunswick from 2012 to 2016. Early life and career Norton was born in Saint John, New Brunswick and started his early life on Grand Manan. He completed a bachelor of arts degree with a major in political science at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, and then attended law school at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton graduating in 1999. Norton was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 2000 and has practiced law with Lawson Creamer since that time, becoming a partner in 2010. Norman McFarlane is a Canadian businessman and politician. He was the 64th Mayor of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He was first elected on May 10, 2004, and sworn into office on Tuesday, May 25. He was defeated in the 2008 New Brunswick municipal elections by Ivan Court. Born in Apohaqui, New Brunswick, McFarlane worked for Royal Insurance in Saint John from 1953 to 1993, retiring as Branch Manager.
