Mayor Of Derry
The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council is an honorary position bestowed upon a Citizen of Derry City & Strabane District in Northern Ireland, who is in practice a member of Derry and Strabane District Council, chosen by their peers on the Council to serve a one-year term. The Mayor is Chairman of the Council as well as the city's first citizen. The current Mayor is Sandra Duffy of Sinn Fein. The district was created in 2015 by the merger of two existing councils. The previous post of ''Mayor of Derry'', more formally ''Lord Mayor of Londonderry'', has a long history. A provost, Sir Henry Docwra, was appointed in the initial city charter of 1604 by James I. Derry
Derry, officially Londonderry (), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fifth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name ''Derry'' is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name (modern Irish: ) meaning 'oak grove'. The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). The population of the city was 83,652 at the 2001 Census, while the Derry Urban Area had a population of 90,736. McFarland Baronets
The McFarland Baronetcy, of Aberfoyle in the County of Londonderry, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 January 1914 for the Irish businessman John McFarland. He was founder of and a partner in the firm of McCrea and McFarland, engineering contractors, of Belfast and Derry, Chairman of Mulhollands, drapers, and owner of the Lough Swilly Steamship Company, and also served as Mayor of Londonderry. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baronet. Pat Ramsey
Pat Ramsey is a retired Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician from Derry, Northern Ireland. He is a former Mayor of Derry, and was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2003 to 2015, when he stood down. Annie Courtney
Annie Courtney is an Irish former Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2000 to 2003. Career Courtney became a nurse in Derry. Courtney joined the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), was elected to Derry City Council in 1985, and served as Mayor of Derry in 1993. Courtney retired from nursing in 1997. When SDLP leader John Hume resigned from the Northern Ireland Assembly, effective from December 2000, Courtney was co-opted as his replacement, representing Foyle. William Alexander Hay, Baron Hay of Ballyore (called Willie; born 16 April 1950, in Milford, County Donegal, Republic of Ireland) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician, who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 1998 to 2014. Mary Bradley
Mary Bradley (born 10 May 1942) is a Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 2003 to 2011. John Tierney (Irish Politician)
John Tierney (born 9 December 1951) is an Irish Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Foyle from 1998 to 2003. Early life and career Born in Derry, Tierney worked as a tool setter before joining the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). He was elected to Derry City Council in 1981, and served as the Mayor of Derry in 1984. Ivor Canavan
Ivor Canavan, OBE (1929–1999) was a politician in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. On leaving St Columb's College, Canavan studied Engineering at University College Dublin. He returned to his native Derry in 1959 and commenced a lifelong career with Du Pont. In the context of a deepening political crisis, Canavan became an active member of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland shortly after its 1970 inception. Ivor Canavan was elected to Londonderry City Council in 1973. In December that year, he took part in the negotiations that culminated in the Sunningdale Agreement. Canavan was elected Deputy Mayor of Londonderry in 1974 and, the following year, became the first and only Alliance Mayor of Londonderry. In May 1976, the Canavan family home was bombed. Raymond McClean
Dr. Raymond McClean (16 January 1933 – 29 January 2011) was an Irish nationalist politician and physician from Northern Ireland. McClean was born in Coleraine but moved to Derry with his parents when he was six. His father had been in the Royal Air Force but ran a pub in Derry. McClean studied at St Columb's College, Derry and then proceeded to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin, where he qualified as a medical doctor in 1958. He then followed his father and enrolled in the Royal Air Force but left after a year and returned to Derry where he worked as a general practitioner and also acted as club doctor to Derry City F.C. and local amateur boxing clubs. Commander Albert Wesley Anderson (23 July 1907 – 18 June 1986) was the son of Rt. Hon. Sir Basil Alexander Talbot McFarland, 2nd Baronet, CBE, ERD (18 February 1898– 5 March 1986) was a Northern Irish soldier, businessman and Ulster Unionist Party politician.
