In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Commissioners
A commissioner (commonly abbreviated as Comm'r) is, in principle, a member of a commission or an individual who has been given a commission (official charge or authority to do something). In practice, the title of commissioner has evolved to include a variety of senior officials, often sitting on a specific commission. In particular, the commissioner frequently refers to senior police or government officials. A high commissioner is equivalent to an ambassador, originally between the United Kingdom and the Dominions and now between all Commonwealth states, whether Commonwealth realms, republics or countries having a monarch other than that of the realms. Daryl Hedley Robert McClure (15 February 1947 – 15 March 2015) was an Australian politician. McClure was born in Bendigo to machinery fitter Ernest John McClure and Jean Hastings. He attended White Hills State School, Bendigo Junior Technical College and Bendigo High School, becoming a television announcer in 1964. On 22 December 1967 he married Carole Anne Rowe, with whom he had two children; they were later divorced. He was secretary of the Bendigo and District Tourist Association from 1967 to 1971 and a Bendigo City Councillor from 1969 to 1970. Peter Ross-Edwards
Peter Ross-Edwards (11 July 1922 – 10 October 2012) was an Australian politician, who became Leader of the National Party in the Victorian Parliament. He was born in Corowa to Rupert Ross-Edwards, a minister of religion, and Una Regan. He attended state schools in Corowa and then Geelong Grammar School, after which he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942. He served in the United Kingdom, Italy, North America and the Middle East as a flying officer, but shortly after he was discharged in 1946 he was hospitalised with tuberculosis, remaining in care until 1948. After leaving hospital he studied law at Melbourne University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree and becoming a solicitor. From 1952 he was a solicitor in Shepparton. He was also active in the Country Party, serving as secretary and treasurer of the Shepparton branch from 1957 to 1967. Bill Galvin (Australian Politician)
Leslie William Galvin (30 April 1903 – 1 July 1966) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Bendigo from 1945 to 1955 when he was defeated at the state election, then regained the seat in 1958 until 1964. Galvin was born in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra, and was educated at Petersham Commercial School until his family moved to Melbourne, where he continued his education at Scotch College. The City of Bendigo was a local government area covering the central area and inner western suburbs of the regional city of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The city covered an area of , and existed from 1855 to 1994. History The City of Bendigo was first incorporated as the Sandhurst Municipality on 24 April 1855. It became a borough on 11 September 1863, and a city on 21 July 1871. It was renamed as the City of Bendigo on 8 May 1891. Accessed at State Library of Victoria, La Trobe Reading Room.
