May 24 Incident
The May 24 incident (), also called the Liu Ziran incident () and the Reynolds riot, was a 1957 international incident between the United States and Taiwan (ROC) that started over the killing of an ROC national and a court-martial conducted by U.S. military personnel in Taiwan, resulting in protests including separate mob attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Taipei, the United States Information Service buildings and a police station. There were other acts of protests prior to, during and after May 24, 1957, across Taiwan and in Taipei that led U.S. government officials behind-the-scenes to refer to these events as "riots" but U.S. officials deliberately spoke of a "riot" to avoid any adverse psychological impact on its alliance with the ROC. Similarly, the May 24 incident was seen then and later as an "anti-American" protest. Institute Of Revolutionary Practice
The Institute of Revolutionary Practice () is an educational institution established in 1949, and affiliated with the Kuomintang. History On 8 July 1949, Chiang Kai-shek and a group of Kuomintang leaders, among them Chang Chi-yun, , Ku Cheng-kang, and Sun Li-jen, founded the Institute of Revolutionary Practice. Later that month, Chiang Ching-kuo, , and were appointed to the preparatory committee. The institute published its own newsletter, ''Practice'', the first issue of which was dated 15 October 1949. The institute's first students were admitted on 16 October 1949. During the 1950s, Chiang Kai-shek attempted to reform the Kuomintang, so that its members were loyal to him. Henry Liu (; 7 December 1932 – 15 October 1984), often known by his pen name Chiang Nan (), was a Taiwanese-American writer and journalist. He was a vocal critic of the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party), then the single ruling party of the Republic of China in Taiwan, and was most famous for writing an unauthorized biography of Chiang Ching-kuo, then president of the Republic of China. He later became a naturalized citizen of the United States, and resided in Daly City, California, where he was assassinated by Bamboo Union members who had been reportedly trained by the Kuomintang's military intelligence division. Biography Liu was born on in Jingjiang, Jiangsu, Republican China. When he was nine years old, his father was killed by Communists. When he turned sixteen, he was drafted into the Nationalist Revolutionary Army, and he left for Taiwan in 1949. Chiang Ching-kuo
Chiang Ching-kuo (27 April 1910 – 13 January 1988) was a politician of the Republic of China after its retreat to Taiwan. The eldest and only biological son of former president Chiang Kai-shek, he held numerous posts in the government of the Republic of China and ended martial law in 1987. He served as Premier of the Republic of China between 1972 and 1978, and was President of the Republic of China from 1978 until his death in 1988. Born in Zhejiang, Chiang-kuo was sent as a teenager to study in the Soviet Union during the First United Front in 1925, when his father's Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party were in alliance. He attended university there and spoke Russian fluently, but when the Chinese Nationalists violently broke with the Communists, Stalin sent him to work in a steel factory in the Ural Mountains.
