Mauro Gardin
Mauro Gardin (born 27 March 1961, in Padua) is a former Italian rugby union player who played as lock. Along with Giuseppe Artuso, Artuso, Piergianni Farina, Farina and Antonio Galeazzo, Galeazzo in Petrarca Rugby, Petrarca's scrum which dominated the Italian rugby scenario in the 1980s (5 ''scudetti'' and 1 Coppa Italia), Gardin debuted in the national team in the 1981-82 FIRA Trophy, at Moscow, against Soviet Union national rugby union team, Soviet Union (the final result was 12-12). A very strong lock (almost two metres high), he took part to all the tournament editions until 1986, then, he took part to the 1987 Rugby World Cup playing all the three matches of the tournament. He ended his international career a year later, against Romania national rugby union team, Romania. Petrarca Rugby is a rugby union club from Padua, Italy, currently competing in the top tier of the Italian rugby union, the Top10. Founded in 1947, the team is the rugby union branch of the Unione Sportiva Petrarca, an omnisport club that includes also basketball, futsal, volleyball, fencing and football. They have won 14 league titles, 11 of them between 1969–70 and 1986-87 seasons; their most recent successes in the Italian championship came 24 years after their latest feat, at the end of the 2010-11 season, and the last one in the 2017-18 season. Giuseppe Artuso
Giuseppe Artuso (born 14 November 1956 in Reggio Calabria), is a former Italian rugby union player and currently, coach. He played as a flanker. Biography Hailing from Calabria, Artuso played for all of his rugby career for Petrarca Rugby, Petrarca, club from Padua where he achieved several player successes and which he also coached and managed. In the 1980s, Artuso was among the protagonists of the squad which won five ''scudetti'', four of which were consecutive from 1984 to 1987, the first with Lucio Boccaletto as coach, the other three with Vittorio Munari in the club's bench. Piergianni Farina (born 1 June 1959 in Bassano del Grappa) is a former Italian rugby union player who played as flanker and number 8. Biography Coming from Rugby Bassano, Farina later moved to Padua, playing for Petrarca Rugby. With the Paduan team, Farina became Italian champion for four consecutive seasons. He played three matches with the Italy national team: debuting in the 1985-87 FIRA Trophy against France national rugby union team, France A1, he was among the starting members in two 1987 Rugby World Cup matches: against New Zealand national rugby union team, New Zealand and Fiji national rugby union team, Fiji, in the former as flanker and in the latter, as number eight. The USSR national rugby union team was a sporting side that represented the Soviet Union in rugby union until the early 1990s. History Although tournaments such as the Soviet Cup and the Soviet Championship existed, rugby never became a major sport in the USSR. The 1987 Rugby World Cup was the first Rugby World Cup. It was co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia – New Zealand hosted 21 matches (17 pool stage matches, two quarter-finals, the third-place play-off and the final) while Australia hosted 11 matches (seven pool matches, two quarter-finals and both semi-finals).
