Mauricio De Sousa
Mauricio Araújo de Sousa (; born October 27, 1935) is a Brazilian cartoonist and businessman who has created over 200 characters for his popular series of children's comic books named "Turma da Mônica" or "Monica's Gang (Currently known as: Monica and friends)". At 17 years of age, he worked for a daily newspaper called ''Folha de S. Paulo, Folha da Manhã'' as a crime reporter. In 1959, Sousa quit that job and began his comic book career, and created ''Monica's Gang''. Sousa's characters were inspired by children he knew from his childhood and by his own children. His later style is slightly reminiscent of that of Osamu Tezuka, a famous Japanese Mangaka, manga artist and personal friend. Rock (manga Character)
Rock (known in some series as Rokuro Makube a.k.a. Rock Macbeth or ) is a recurrent major character in most of Osamu Tezuka's manga series, and he is an important part of Osamu Tezuka's Star System. Horacio's World
''Horacio's World'' is a Brazilian comic strip, part of the Monica and Friends comic strips. The main character is Horácio, a baby Tyrannosaurus rex, created in 1961. He debuted as one of the supporting characters of Pitheco's comics in The Cavern Clan, but their solo stories started in 1963. Other minor characters appear occasionally, but Horacio's strips mostly consist of monologues and self-reflections (some of them are even entirely pantomimic), thus making him Mauricios's alter-ego. Also, all his stories are written by Mauricio himself. Some comics have also been published in Japan before between 1975 and 1982, but recently have been published again by the Sanrio's magazine ''Ichigo Shinbun''. The Cavern Clan
''The Cavern Clan'' (''Piteco'') is a Brazilian comic strip created in 1961 by Mauricio de Sousa. It is part of the ''Monica's Gang'' series. It centers around a prehistoric tribe in the Stone Age and depicts them living in the presence of dinosaurs. Most of the stories feature Pitheco hunting dinosaurs, running away from Tooga, or even his friends and he fighting against other village's people. The characters were anachronistically aware; for example, if a character needed to walk a long distance, he or she would say, “Too bad they didn’t invent the car yet, ’cause otherwise I could go faster”. ''Lionel's Kingdom'' (''Turma da Mata'') is a Brazilian comic strip created in 1961 and part of the ''Monica's Gang'' comic strips. The series features anthropomorphic animals who almost all walking on two feet (except for Tim Turtle), wear clothes, and obviously, are able to speak. Their home is a forest, presumably in Brazil, although featuring mostly African animals. ''Bug-a-Booo'' ("Turma do Penadinho") is a Brazilian comic strip, created in 1963 and part of the Monica's Gang series. All of the characters are monsters or other supernatural creatures, none of them being a human being. The main location for their stories is a cemetery. However, their stories are not intended to be scary, they are sometimes classified as “Terrir”, which is a Portmanteau of the Portuguese words "Terror" ''( horror)'' and "Rir" ''(to laugh)''. In some of the stories, they have to deal with the fact that vampires, ghosts, zombies and mummies are no longer appreciated as characters of horror films. ''Tina's Pals'' ("Turma da Tina") is a Brazilian comic strip series, part of the Monica's Gang series, created in 1970. The stories are aimed at a more teenage group of readers, rather than the kids who would read other Mauricio de Sousa's works and thus center around teenagers. However, Mauricio prefers not to mention drugs, sex, alcoholic drinks, or other similar subjects, which are very popular among teenagers. Instead, the strips are written with themes related to school or university, dating, problems with parents, etc. Originally the stories recounted the life of Tina and her family living in Salvador, Flip (Toneco) was the original protagonist. The stories changed when Tina joined the hippie culture and started to act alongside Curly (Rolo). ''Chuck Billy 'n' Folks'' (''Turma do Chico Bento'') is a Brazilian comic strip and part of the ''Monica's Gang'' comic book series, created by Mauricio de Sousa. The stories are centered on Chuck Billy (originally named Chico Bento) and his friends and parents, who are all caipiras and live in the small Vila Abobrinha (Zucchini’s Village), a fictional location on the countryside of Brazil. Blu (Monica's Gang)
''Blu'' (''Bidu'') is a character in the Brazilian comic strip ''Monica's Gang'', created in 1959. He was the first character created by Maurício de Sousa, along with his owner Franklin (''Franjinha''). The character appears in the logo and is the mascot of Mauricio de Sousa Produções, the company founded by Sousa to release his works. Blu is the only character who appears in two different kinds of stories. In one, he is a normal dog, owned by Franklin, who fears taking baths (but is invariably forced to take them by Franklin), does anything in exchange for a bone, and plays around with the other dogs from the neighborhood.
