Maureen Hemphill
Maureen Lucille Hemphill (born January 26, 1937) was a Manitoba politician. She served in the cabinet of NDP Premier Howard Pawley, and was an unsuccessful candidate for the party's leadership in 1988. She was born Maureen Lucille Miller, the daughter of James Leroy Miller and Elaine Agnes McParlor, in Grand Forks, British Columbia, and was educated at Bralorne. She served on the Assiniboine South School Board in 1969, 1970 and 1973. She married H. David Hemphill but they had divorced by the 1980s. Hemphill first ran for the provincial legislature in 1977, in the southwest Winnipeg riding of Charleswood. She was defeated by Progressive Conservative leader Sterling Lyon, whose party defeated Edward Schreyer's New Democratic Party to win the election. The Manitoba NDP regained power under Howard Pawley in 1981, and Hemphill was easily elected for the north Winnipeg riding of Logan (former Mayor Steve Juba was a distant second). David Walker (born August 1, 1947) is a Canadian politician. He served in the House of Commons of Canada from 1988 to 1997, as a member of the Liberal Party. Walker was born in Sudbury, Ontario. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University (1970), a Master of Arts from Queen's University (1974), and a Ph.D. from McMaster University (1976). He was a professor of Political Science at the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba from 1974 to 1988, and was also an adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba from 1977 to 1988. Walker was a partner in Walker-Zimmerman Consultants from 1978 to 1985, and served as president of West-Can Consultants Ltd. from 1978 to 1993. Winnipeg North Centre was a federal electoral district in Manitoba, Canada, that was represented by a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of Canada from 1925 to 2004. It is a largely working class riding in Winnipeg and has traditionally had a large Jewish and immigrant population. The riding was created in 1924 and was first used for the 1925 federal election when it elected J.S. Woodsworth of the Independent Labour Party as its first MP. Woodsworth had previously represented Winnipeg Centre since the 1921 election. Woodsworth was re-elected there in 1926 and 1930. He held the seat for the party through the 1935 election and 1940 elections until his death in 1942. Andy Anstett
Andrue John Anstett (born June 25, 1946) is a former politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the New Democratic Party government of Premier Howard Pawley, and made an unsuccessful bid for the party's leadership in 1988. Anstett was born in Groningen in the Netherlands, and moved to Kitchener, Ontario as an infant. He received an honours political science degree from the University of Waterloo and did post-graduate studies in Canadian parliamentary procedure and election administration. He moved to Manitoba in 1973 upon his appointment as deputy clerk of the Legislative Assembly and deputy chief electoral officer for the province. He held these positions until resigning in 1979.
