Matthew Laird
Matthew Laird (born 1977) is a Canadian academic, activist and politician. Having helped lead numerous political campaigns he continues to work with community groups on social and environmental issues. Laird was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. After spending some years in the private sector as a software developer he returned to academia to work in bioinformatic research at Simon Fraser University. He currently resides in the City of Vancouver. Environmentalism Laird has talked about being raised around recycling and green ideas as the basis for his environmental activism. While involved with transportation and sustainability advocacy most of his life he became most involved after moving to New Westminster in 2003. British Columbia Democratic Coalition
The British Columbia Democratic Coalition (BCDC) was a short-lived coalition of minor political parties in British Columbia, Canada. It was founded in September 2004 to bring together four minor parties: the British Columbia Democratic Alliance, the British Columbia Moderate Democratic Movement, the Citizens Action Party and Link BC. The British Columbia Labour Party joined shortly thereafter. On October 19, 2004, Link BC and CAP left the coalition, citing concerns that the group was too-closely associated with Gordon Wilson. Dawn Black (born April 1, 1943) is a politician in British Columbia, Canada. Born ''Dawn Whitty'', Black became involved in politics from a young age, she became an assistant to New Democratic Party Member of Parliament Pauline Jewett. Member of Parliament She was elected as the MP for New Westminster—Burnaby in the 1988 federal election, succeeding the retiring Jewett. As an MP, one of her most notable achievements was proposing a private members bill that made December 6, the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, a permanent day of remembrance and action against violence against women. She also led the opposition to the Tories' anti-abortion measure and proposed an anti- stalking measure, which was later adopted by Parliament. New Westminster (provincial Electoral District)
New Westminster is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It is the only electoral district in British Columbia to have existed for every general election. The riding is notable for a couple of reasons. It never voted for a Social Credit candidate during the Socred's era of dominance between 1952 and 1991. It was also represented by Byron Ingemar Johnson, the 24th Premier of British Columbia. During the 1990s, the riding was represented by Anita Hagen, who served as Deputy Premier of British Columbia and Minister of Education from 1991 to 1993 during the premiership of Mike Harcourt. The 2009 British Columbia general election was held on May 12, 2009, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The British Columbia Liberal Party (BC Liberals) formed the government of the province prior to this general election under the leadership of Premier Gordon Campbell. The 2005 British Columbia general election was held on May 17, 2005, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Province of British Columbia (BC), Canada. The British Columbia Liberal Party (BC Liberals) formed the government of the province prior to this general election under the leadership of Premier Gordon Campbell.
