Matiko (Bilbao Metro)
Matiko is the northern terminus of line 3 of the Bilbao metro. The station is also served by Euskotren Trena commuter and regional rail services. The station is located in the neighborhood of Matiko-Ciudad Jardín, part of the Uribarri district of Bilbao. In its current form, the station opened on 8 April 2017. History The original station, named ''Matico'', opened on 30 June 1887 as part of the narrow-gauge ''Bilbao-Las Arenas railway'', which connected the city of Bilbao with Getxo. Matico was also the terminus station of the ''Matico-Azbarren railway'', a narrow-gauge mostly underground suburban railway that connected the peripheral municipality of Basauri with central Bilbao at Matico. Getxo
Getxo () is a town located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, in Spain. It is part of Greater Bilbao, and has 77,946 inhabitants (2019). Getxo is mostly an affluent residential area, as well as being the third largest municipality of Biscay. History Getxo (formerly spelt ''Guecho'') was a parish (''elizatea, ''anteiglesia'), originally a rural area, including a large beach at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao, centered on the little fishing village of Algorta. Island Platform
An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. An alternative arrangement is to position side platforms on either side of the tracks. The historical use of island platforms depends greatly upon the location. Line 1 (Bilbao Metro)
Line 1 of the Bilbao metro is a rapid transit line in Biscay, Basque Country, Spain. It runs from Etxebarri to Plentzia. Its route covers the municipality of Etxebarri, the city of Bilbao, the right bank of the Nervión river and Uribe Kosta. The line has 29 stations. History On November 11 1995, Lehendakari José Antonio Ardanza opened the first 23 stations of the metro system between Casco Viejo and Plentzia. The next year, on June 24 1996, Gobela opened as an infill station between Areeta and Neguri, in the municipality of Getxo. On July 5 1997, three new stations were opened: Santutxu, Basarrate and Bolueta; all in Bilbao. Line 2 of the metro opened in 2002, sharing tracks with the first line between Bolueta and San Inazio. The Basque Government ( eu, Eusko Jaurlaritza, es, Gobierno Vasco) is the governing body of the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. The head of the Basque government is known as the ''Lehendakari''. The Lehendakari is appointed by the Basque Parliament every four years, after a regional election. Euskotren, formally known as Basque Railways ( eu, Eusko Trenbideak, es, Ferrocarriles Vascos), is a public railway company controlled by the Basque Government and officially established in 1982 to operate several narrow gauge railways inside the autonomous community of the Basque Country, under the terms of the Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country. Renfe Feve is a division of state-owned Spanish railway company Renfe Operadora. It operates most of Spain's of railway. Metro Bilbao
The Bilbao metro ( es, Metro de Bilbao, eu, Bilboko metroa) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Bilbao and the region of Greater Bilbao.
