Masking Threshold (film)
''Masking Threshold'' is a 2021 English-language Austrian horror film directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner, and produced by art group monochrom. Plot A skeptic IT worker tries to cure his harrowing hearing impairment by conducting a series of experiments in his makeshift home lab. The film combines the style of a chamber play, a scientific procedural and the aesthetic of unboxing or DIY YouTube videos, with body horror elements and techniques known from experimental film. Grenzfurthner sees the film in the tradition of ''extreme cinema'', but presents elements of psychological horror. Johannes Grenzfurthner
Johannes Grenzfurthner (; born 1975 in Vienna) is an Austrian artist, filmmaker, writer, actor, curator, theatre director, performer and lecturer. Grenzfurthner is the founder, conceiver and artistic director of ''monochrom'', an international art and theory group and film production company. Most of his artworks are labeled ''monochrom''. Grenzfurthner is an outspoken researcher in subversive and underground culture, for example the field of sexuality and technology, and one of the founders of "techno-hedonism". Boing Boing magazine referred to Grenzfurthner as ''leitnerd'', a wordplay with the German term Leitkultur that ironically hints at Grenzfurthner's role in nerd/hacker/art culture. Annick Mahnert (born 1975, Geneva) is a film festival curator and film producer. She is the director of programming at ''Fantastic Fest'', programs the ''Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival'', and has been named executive director of the Canadian genre industry platform ''Frontières''. Life and work Annick Mahnert studied film production at the NYFA and worked as a production assistant at Roger Corman's ''Concorde-New Horizons''.
