Mary L. Smith
Mary L. Smith (born August 28, 1962) is an American lawyer and former principal deputy director and acting director of the Indian Health Services from October 2015 to February 2017. Previously she was general counsel for the Illinois Department of Insurance. From 2009 until August 2010, she had been a presidential nominee to be the Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice. However, she was never confirmed by the Senate, and the White House in 2010 decided not to renominate her to the post. In 2023, she was sworn in as president of the American Bar Association. Early life and education A Native American and member of the Cherokee Nation, Smith was born in Chicago. She earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude in May 1984 from Loyola University Chicago. American Bar Association
The American Bar Association (ABA) is a voluntary bar association of lawyers and law students, which is not specific to any jurisdiction in the United States. Founded in 1878, the ABA's most important stated activities are the setting of academic standards for law schools, and the formulation of model ethical codes related to the legal profession. As of fiscal year 2017, the ABA had 194,000 dues-paying members, constituting approximately 14.4% of American attorneys. In 1979, half of all lawyers in the U.S. were members of the ABA. The organization's national headquarters are in Chicago, Illinois, and it also maintains a significant branch office in Washington, D.C.
