Mary Ann Furnace Historic District
The Mary Ann Furnace Historic District, also known as Trexler's Furnace, is an historic "iron plantation" and national historic district located in Longswamp Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. History and architectural features This district encompasses five contributing buildings, one contributing site, and one contributing structure. They are the iron furnace stack (1789), a stone and frame bank barn (c. 1830-1860), the manager's house and office (c. 1830-1860), a blacksmith shop (1854), a charcoal house (c. 1850), a stone dam, and a small stone house (c. 1830-1850). The furnace remained in operation until 1869. It is commemorated by a historical marker that was erected in 1924. Today, it is owned by the Rohrbach family, which continues to keep the property as historical accurate as possible. Longswamp Township is a township in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,551 at the 2020 census. History The Long-Hawerter Mill and Mary Ann Furnace Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Demographics As of the 2000 census, of 2000, there were 5,608 people, 2,029 households, and 1,529 families residing in the township. The population density was 246.1 people per square mile (95.0/km). There were 2,097 housing units at an average density of 92.0/sq mi (35.5/km). The racial makeup of the township was 98.95% White, 0.32% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84% of the population. Iron Plantation
Iron plantations were rural localities emergent in the late-18th century and predominant in the early-19th century that specialized in the production of pig iron and bar iron from crude iron ore. Such plantations derive their name from two sources: first, because they were nearly self-sufficient communities despite an almost singular focus on the production of iron to be sold on the market, and second, because of the large swaths of forest and land necessary to provide charcoal fuel and ore for their operations. The first plantations stretched across the Northeast, Midwest, and Southern United States, “the chief charcoal iron producing states [being] Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky."
