Martin Strege
Martin Strege (born 21 February 1966 in Kassel) is a retired German runner who specialized in the 3000 metres steeplechase. He finished fourteenth at the 1993 World Championships, sixth at the 1994 European Championships and eighth at the 1995 World Championships. His personal best time is 8:18.57 minutes, achieved at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg. This result places him tenth on the German all-time performers list, behind Damian Kallabis, Hagen Melzer, Frank Baumgartl, Rainer Schwarz, Uwe Pflügner, Michael Karst, Steffen Brand, Patriz Ilg and Marc Ostendarp. Kassel
Kassel (; in Germany, spelled Cassel until 1926) is a city on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. Patriz Ilg (born 5 December 1957 in Aalen-Oberalfingen) is a retired 3000 m steeplechaser from West Germany. Biography He won a silver medal at the 1978 European Championships and gold medals at the 1982 European Championships in Athens and the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. At the European Indoor Championships he competed in the 3000 metres and won the gold medal in 1982 and finished sixth in 1984. At the 1986 European Championships Ilg came close to defending his title. However, he was overtaken on the final straight by Francesco Panetta (silver) and Hagen Melzer of the GDR (gold). In 1987 Ilg participated in the World Championships final in Rome but missed out on a medal. His time of 8:15.06 minutes from the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki remained his career best time. Michael Karst (born 28 January 1952 in Mannheim) is a retired 3000 m steeplechaser from West Germany. Biography He finished fifth at the 1976 Summer Olympics, first at the 1977 World Cup and fourth at the 1978 European Championships. He also won two silver and one gold medal at the Summer Universiades in 1973, 1975 and 1977. At the 1977 European Indoor Championships he finished sixth in 3000 metres. In June 1974 he set a new European record of 8:18.4 minutes, which he improved to a then-national record of 8:18.0 at the 1974 European Championships where he won the bronze medal. He improved his (West) German record on two occasions in Stockholm, first to 8:16.2 minutes in July 1975 and finally to 8:14.05 minutes in July 1977.
