Martin Roth (psychiatrist)
Sir Martin Roth (6 November 1917, Budapest – 26 September 2006, Cambridge) was a British psychiatrist. He was Professor of Psychiatry, University of Cambridge, 1977–85, then Professor Emeritus, and was a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1977. He was one of the pioneers in developing Psychogeriatrics as a subspecialty. Roth was also a trustee of the Schizophrenia Research Fund, a charity founded by Miriam Rothschild. He is buried in Cambridge City Cemetery. Early life Roth was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, on 6 November 1917. He was the son of a synagogue cantor. The history of the Jews in Hungary dates back to at least the Kingdom of Hungary, with some records even predating the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE by over 600 years. Written sources prove that Jewish communities lived in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and it is even assumed that several sections of the heterogeneous Hungarian tribes practiced Judaism. Jewish officials served the king during the early 13th century reign of Andrew II.
