Martin Luther School is a co-educational private Lutheran middle and high school in the Maspeth neighborhood of the borough of Queens, New York City, in the State of New York, United States. Founded in 1960 as Martin Luther High School, the name of the school was changed to Martin Luther School in 2012 when a middle school was added. Students Martin Luther School serves students from Queens and Brooklyn from a variety of ethnic, religious, and academic backgrounds. Academics Students are required to take classes in business, English, history, fine arts, foreign languages, mathematics, physical education, science, and theology. Martin Luther also offers Advanced Placement courses. Martin Luther School is accredited by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States and outlying territories, which consists of many chapters in high schools. Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship (academic achievement), leadership, service, and character. The National Honor Society requires some sort of service to the community, school, or other organizations. The time spent working on these projects contributes towards the monthly service hour requirement. Key Club International, also called Key Club, is an international service organization for high school students. As a student-led organization, Key Club's goal is to encourage leadership through serving others. Key Club International is the high school branch of the Kiwanis International family, classifying as a Service Leadership Program and more specifically as a Kiwanis Youth Program. Many Key Clubs are sponsored by a local Kiwanis club. The organization was started by California State Commissioner of Schools Albert C. Olney and vocational education teacher Frank C. International Thespian Society
The International Thespian Society (ITS) is an honor society for high school and middle school theatre students. It is a division of the Educational Theatre Association. Thespian troupes serve students in grades 9–12; Junior Thespian troupes serve students in grades 6 through 8. A few famous ITS alumni include Tom Hanks, Val Kilmer, James Marsters, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Stephen Schwartz. Festivals are held annually at the state and national levels. Each June the organization holds the International Thespian Festival. For 25 years it was held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
