Martese
Martese is a "frazione" (hamlet) in the commune of Rocca Santa Maria in the Province of Teramo, Italy. Geography The village sits at an elevation of approximately above sea level. The distance by car to Rocca Santa Maria is less than one mile. The infrequently used road between these two towns is steep and rather primitive. It can be found just off the provincial highway (SP 48) that leads from Teramo to Ceppo via Rocca Santa Maria and Bosco Martese. The old town center is composed of a small cluster of houses. As was the custom of the day a small church sits nearby and off to itself. Martese can be found at the top of a promontory overlooking the high Tordino Valle and lies in the heart of the Abruzzo territory known as Monti della Laga within the Italian Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. Tavolero
Tavolero, (also referred to as Tavolier, Tivolieri, or in ancient Roman times as ''Tebularium'') is a "frazione" (i.e., suburb) of the Communal town of Rocca Santa Maria in the Province of Teramo. It is located in the area known as Monti della Laga and sits within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The village can be found at an elevation about 2709 feet on a rocky piece of land that juts out over and dominates the nearby Tordino River. In the year 2007 Tavolero is but an uninhabited ghosttown. Most of the villas in the village date back to the 18th century. One in particular is of major historical significance and was likely constructed in the 15th century. History Overview The village likely takes its name from the word ''sèrrə'' which in the local dialect means crest. The location of Serra is in fact on a high elevation overlooking the Vezzola river. In previous times the village belonged to the ''Università'' (a medieval term typically referring to several small clusters of dwellings) of the village of Rocca Bisegna.
