Mark Milbank
Major Sir Mark Vane Milbank, 4th Baronet, (11 January 1907 – 4 April 1984) was a British Army officer and courtier, who served as Master of the Household from 1954 to 1967. Early life He was the son of Sir Frederick Richard Milbank, 3rd Baronet and Harriet Anne Dorothy Wilson. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military career Milbank commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1930, and served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bombay between 1933 and 1938. He saw active service in the Second World War, and was awarded the Military Cross in 1945. Courtier He was Comptroller to the Governor General of Canada between 1946 and 1952, before being appointed Deputy Master of the Household. In 1953 Milbank became Master of the Household and was invested as a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. He held the position until 1967, became a CVO in 1958, and was knighted as a KCVO in 1962. Major (United Kingdom)
Major (Maj) is a military rank which is used by both the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank is superior to captain and subordinate to lieutenant colonel. The insignia for a major is a crown. The equivalent rank in the Royal Navy is lieutenant commander, and squadron leader in the Royal Air Force. An equerry (; from French ' stable', and related to 'squire') is an officer of honour. Historically, it was a senior attendant with responsibilities for the horses of a person of rank. In contemporary use, it is a personal attendant, usually upon a sovereign, a member of a royal family, or a national representative. The role is equivalent to an aide-de-camp, but the term is now prevalent only in the Commonwealth of Nations. Milbank Baronets
The Milbank Baronetcy, of Well in the County of York, and of Hart in the County of Durham, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 16 May 1882 for Frederick Milbank, member of parliament for the North Riding of Yorkshire and for Richmond. The second Baronet represented Radnorshire in the House of Commons as a Conservative. The fourth Baronet was Master of the Household between 1954 and 1967. Geoffrey Hardy-Roberts
Brigadier Sir Geoffrey Paul Hardy-Roberts (16 May 1907 – 9 April 1997) was a British Army officer, Conservative politician and courtier, who served as Master of the Household between 1967 and 1973. He was High Sheriff of Sussex in 1965. Biography Hardy-Roberts was born Geoffrey Paul Francis Jacques Roberts, the son of Alfred Walter Roberts and Marguerite, the daughter of Paul Nathan who had changed his name to Hardy. Geoffrey changed his surname by deed poll in 1937. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, before commissioning into the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers in 1926. He initially served in India and was promoted to lieutenant in 1929. In 1933, he returned to the United Kingdom and served as Adjutant of his regiment between 1933 and 1935. Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. Sir Piers Walter Legh (12 December 1890 – 16 October 1955) was a British Army officer and a senior member of the Royal Household. Life Second son of the 2nd Baron Newton and Evelyn Caroline Bromley Davenport, Legh was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst before being commissioned into the Grenadier Guards. He served as a Military Secretary during the First World War, being mentioned in despatches. In 1919, he was appointed Equerry to the Prince of Wales until 1936 and then to King George VI from 1937 to 1946 (and then as Extra Equerry from 1946 to 1955). Arthur Maxwell, 11th Baron Farnham
The Rt Hon. Arthur Kenlis Maxwell, 11th Baron Farnham, (2 October 1879 – 5 February 1957), was a British Army officer, an Irish Representative peer and a Nova Scotia baronet. He was the son of the 10th Baron Farnham and Lady Florence Jane Taylour, a daughter of the 3rd Marquess of Headfort. On his father's death in November 1900, he succeeded as the 11th Baron Farnham (and 14th in the family Baronetcy) and inherited the Farnham Estate, County Cavan. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and received his first commission as second lieutenant in the 10th Hussars on 12 August 1899.
