Marj Mitchell Sportsmanship Award
The Marj Mitchell Sportsmanship Award is the sportsmanship award at the annual Scotties Tournament of Hearts, held to crown the Canadian women's curling championship. When Scott Paper took over sponsorship of the Canadian Women's Curling Championship in 1982, they decided to present an annual award for sportsmanship. From 1982 to 1997, the award had a different name each year, as the convention was to name the annual award after an individual from the host region who exemplified sportsmanship and dedication to curling. In 1998, the decision was made to honour Marj Mitchell each year. Mitchell curled for Saskatchewan and captured the national and world championships in 1982. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. Cathy Dillon
''Cathy'' is an American gag-a-day comic strip, drawn by Cathy Guisewite from 1976 until 2010. The comic follows Cathy, a woman who struggles through the "four basic guilt groups" of life—food, love, family, and work. The strip gently pokes fun at the lives and foibles of modern women. The strip debuted on November 22, 1976, and appeared in over 1,400 newspapers at its peak. The strips have been compiled into more than 20 books. Three television specials were also created. Vera Pezer
Vera Rose Pezer (born 13 January 1939) is a Canadian athlete and administrator. Pezer was the Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan from 2007 to 2013. A sports enthusiast, Pezer is a Canadian softball champion, golfing contender, and curling champion. She has been inducted into both the Saskatchewan Sports Halls of Fame and the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. In 2019, Pezer was named the ninth greatest Canadian curler in history in a TSN poll of broadcasters, reporters and top curlers. Education Pezer attended school in Meskanaw. Alison Goring
Alison Goring (born November 15, 1963) is a Canadian curler. Career 1990–1997 Goring is a former Canadian champion skip, having won the 1990 Scott Tournament of Hearts. She was also a successful junior curler, having won the 1983 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Goring won her first provincial championship in 1990. Her Ontario rink would with that years' Scott Tournament of Hearts, defeating the Nova Scotia team, skipped by Heather Rankin. Her win gave her the right to represent Canada at the 1990 World Championships. At the 1990 Worlds, they lost to Norway's Dordi Nordby in the semi-final. Her Hearts win in 1990 gave her team the right to represent team Canada at the 1991 Scott Tournament of Hearts. At that tournament, her team finished with 6 wins and 5 losses. Lee Tobin
Lee "Little Mouse" Tobin (born 1922 as Eileen Herdman; died January 3, 1996, in Vancouver)''Montreal Gazette'', 6 Jan 1996, pg F14, "Births & Deaths" was a Canadian curler. A member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, she remains the only skip to lead Quebec to a national women's curling championship, having won the 1975 Macdonald Lassies Championship. Curling career Representing Westmount's Caledonia Curling Club, Tobin won her first Quebec women's championship in 1970, defeating Pointe Claire's Shirley Bradford in a tie-breaker playoff, after having been tied in first with them in the standings at a 5–2 record. Sylvia Fedoruk
Sylvia Olga Fedoruk ( e-doruk Ukrainian: Федорук) (May 5, 1927 – September 26, 2012) was a Canadian physicist, medical physicist, curler and the 17th Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. Life Born in Canora, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, Annie Romaniuk and Theodore Fedoruk. Fedoruk attended a one room schoolhouse in Wroxton north east of the city of Yorkton. Her father was her teacher. During World War II, the family relocated to Ontario where her parents took war factory work. In 1946, she completed her studies at Walkerville Collegiate in Windsor Ontario, at the top of her class and was awarded the Ernest J. Heidi Hanlon
Heidi Hanlon (born October 9, 1958, in Harvey, New Brunswick) is a Canadians, Canadian curling, curler from Saint John, New Brunswick. Hanlon is an 11-time New Brunswick Scotties Tournament of Hearts, provincial women's champion skip, provincial mixed champion and two-time provincial women's seniors championship. She became a Canadian champion for the first time by winning the 2011 Canadian Senior Curling Championships. It was the first women's title for the province.
