Maritime Museum
A maritime museum (sometimes nautical museum) is a museum specializing in the display of objects relating to ships and travel on large bodies of water. A subcategory of maritime museums are naval museums, which focus on navies and the military use of the sea. The great prize of a maritime museum is a historic ship (or a replica) made accessible as a museum ship, but as these are large and require a considerable budget to maintain, many museums preserve smaller or more fragile ships or partial ships within the museum buildings. Most museums exhibit interesting pieces of ships (such as a figurehead or cannon), ship models, and miscellaneous small items associated with ships and shipping, like cutlery, uniforms, and so forth. Ship modellers often have a close association with maritime museums; not only does the museum have items that help the modeller achieve better accuracy, but the museum provides a display space for models larger than will comfortably fit in a modeller's ho ...

French Ship Astrolabe (1781)
''Astrolabe'' was a converted flûte of the French Navy, famous for her travels with Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse. She was built in 1781 at Le Havre as the flûte ''Autruche'' for the French Navy. In May 1785 she and her sistership ''Boussole'' (previously ''Portefaix'') were renamed and rerated as frigates, and fitted for round-the-world scientific exploration. The two ships departed from Brest on 1 August 1785, ''Boussole'' commanded by Lapérouse and ''Astrolabe'' under Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle. Disappearance The expedition vanished mysteriously in 1788 after leaving Botany Bay on 10 March 1788. Captain Peter Dillon in solved the mystery in 1827 when he found remnants of the ships ''Astrolabe'' and ''Boussole'' at Vanikoro Island in the Solomon Islands. Local inhabitants reported that the ships had been wrecked in a storm. Survivors from one ship had been massacred, while survivors from the other ship had constructed their own small boat and sailed ...

Pygmy Blue Whale
The pygmy blue whale (''Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda'') is a subspecies of the blue whale (''Balaenoptera musculus'') found in the Indian Ocean and the southern Pacific Ocean. Reaching lengths of up to 24 metres (79 ft) it is smaller than the other commonly recognized subspecies, ''B. m. musculus'' and ''B. m. intermedia'', the former reaching 28 m (92 ft) and the latter 30 m (98 ft), hence its common name. The pygmy blue whale is the only one of the three identifiable subspecies to be found regularly in tropical waters. It occurs from the sub-Antarctic zone to the southern Indian Ocean and southwestern Pacific Ocean, breeding in the Indian and South Atlantic oceans, and travelling south to above the Antarctic to feed, although they very rarely cross the Antarctic Convergence. A fourth subspecies, ''B. m. indica'', was identified by Blyth in 1859 in the northern Indian Ocean, but difficulties in identifying distinguishing features for this subs ...

Museums In New Caledonia
A museum ( ; plural museums or, rarely, musea) is a building or institution that cares for and displays a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance. The largest museums are located in major cities throughout the world, while thousands of local museums exist in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas.
