Maritime Museum Of New Caledonia
Maritime Museum of New Caledonia, also Musée Maritime de Nouvelle Caledonie, is a maritime museum in New Caledonia. It is largely dedicated to the history of French colonial exploration in the Pacific and the collection includes objects retrieved from the frigates ''Astrolabe'' and '' Boussole,'' which were wrecked under the captaincy of Jean-François de Galaup de Lapérouse. Background The museum is located near the Betico ferry terminal in Noumea. It occupies a former maritime station that was donated by the Autonomous Port of New Caledonia. The museum opened in 1999. In 2009, a commemorative stamp was issued to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the museum. The museum was renovated in 2013, which involved the creation of new galleries. In 2021 the museum opened a new temporary exhibition on the history of the cruise and the journey by sea from France to the territory. Nouméa () is the capital and largest city of the French special collectivity of New Caledonia and is also the largest francophone city in Oceania. ''Astrolabe'' was a converted flûte of the French Navy, famous for her travels with Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse. She was built in 1781 at Le Havre as the flûte ''Autruche'' for the French Navy. In May 1785 she and her sistership ''Boussole'' (previously ''Portefaix'') were renamed and rerated as frigates, and fitted for round-the-world scientific exploration. The two ships departed from Brest on 1 August 1785, ''Boussole'' commanded by Lapérouse and ''Astrolabe'' under Paul Antoine Fleuriot de Langle. Disappearance The expedition vanished mysteriously in 1788 after leaving Botany Bay on 10 March 1788. Jean-François De Galaup, Comte De Lapérouse
Jean François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse (; variant spelling: ''La Pérouse''; 23 August 17411788?), often called simply Lapérouse, was a French naval officer and explorer. Having enlisted at the age of 15, he had a successful naval career and in 1785 was appointed to lead a scientific expedition around the world. His ships stopped in Chile, Hawaii, Alaska, California, Mauritius, Reunion, Macau, Japan, Russia, and Australia, before wrecking on the reefs of Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands. Early career Jean-François de Galaup was born near Albi, France. His family was ennobled in 1558. Lapérouse studied in a Jesuit college, and joined the Navy as a Garde-Marine in Brest on 19 November 1756. In 1757 he was appointed to the French ship ''Célèbre'' and participated in a supply expedition to the fort of Louisbourg in New France. Pygmy Blue Whale
The pygmy blue whale (''Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda'') is a subspecies of the blue whale (''Balaenoptera musculus'') found in the Indian Ocean and the southern Pacific Ocean. Reaching lengths of up to 24 metres (79 ft) it is smaller than the other commonly recognized subspecies, ''B. m. musculus'' and ''B. m. intermedia'', the former reaching 28 m (92 ft) and the latter 30 m (98 ft), hence its common name. The pygmy blue whale is the only one of the three identifiable subspecies to be found regularly in tropical waters.
