Marion–Florence USD 408 is a public unified school district headquartered in Marion, Kansas, United States. History In 1945, the ''School Reorganization Act'' in Kansas caused the consolidation of thousands of rural school districts in Kansas. In 1963, the ''School Unification Act'' in Kansas caused the further consolidatation of thousands of tiny school districts into hundreds of larger Unified School Districts. High school students from Florence started attending Marion High School in fall 1971 after the Florence High School was closed in the same year. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. The Athletic Association started as a small voluntary group of fewer than 50 schools and grew to more than 500 schools by the 1920s. The Marion County Record is a weekly newspaper published in Marion, Kansas, and serves as the official newspaper of City of Marion and Marion County. The paper publishes every Wednesday. History Origins The newspaper's first issue came off the press on September 24, 1869, just six months after Ulysses S. Grant had replaced Andrew Johnson as president and only eight years after Kansas had become a state. Founding editor and publisher A.W. Robinson called the paper ''The Western News'', and it was initially printed 57 miles away in Detroit, in adjoining Dickinson County. The paper moved to Marion Centre in 1870 because of a community effort by J.N. Rogers, J.H. Costello, A.E. Case, Levi Billings, William H. Billings and A.A. Marion County Lake is a body of water, southeast of Marion at 170th Street, on the western edge of the Flint Hills region of Kansas in the United States. This small lake is not the larger Marion Reservoir, which is northwest of Marion. Geography Marion County Lake is located at coordinates 38.3206708, -96.9852588 in the scenic Flint Hills and Great Plains of the state of Kansas. The lake area has three entrances. Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita.
