Marion Davis Berdecio
Marion Davis Berdecio (1922 - 2006), born Marion Davis, was a recruit of the Soviet intelligence in the United States. Career Berdecio worked on the staff of the Office of Naval Intelligence at the US embassy in Mexico City and was one of several people recruited to assist Soviet intelligence during World War II by Flora Wovschin, her classmate at Barnard College. She was later transferred to the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs (CIAA) in Washington DC. Her recruitment by Wovschin is documented in three Venona project decrypts. Russian archives in Moscow also show the KGB querying the Comintern for information on Davis.Klehr and Haynes, ''Secret World'' 307. The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) is the military intelligence agency of the United States Navy. Established in 1882 primarily to advance the Navy's modernization efforts, it is the oldest member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and serves as the nation's premier source of maritime intelligence. Roberto Berdecio
Roberto Guardia Berdecio (20 October 1910–1996) was a Bolivian-born artist and a significant contributor to the important political and cultural art movement in Mexico during the 1950s and 1960s. Early life Berdecio was born in Sucre, Bolivia. Career Berdecio worked in New York City in the 1930s with David Alfaro Siqueiros. Berdecio moved to Mexico in the late 1940s where he continued his career in art. He painted murals and portraits, created lithographs and artistic explorations into the fourth dimension. Berdecio's personal archives, which outlined his collaboration with David Alfaro Siquieros in New York and Mexico, was purchased by the Getty Museum in 1995. He died in La Paz, Bolivia in 1996. Andre Gunder Frank
Andre Gunder Frank (February 24, 1929 – April 25, 2005) was a German-American sociologist and economic historian who promoted dependency theory after 1970 and world-systems theory after 1984. He employed some Marxian concepts on political economy, but rejected Marx's stages of history, and economic history generally. Biography Frank was born in Germany to, pacifist writer Leonhard Frank and his second wife Elena Maqenne Penswehr, but his family fled the country when the Nazis came to power. Frank received schooling in several places in Switzerland, where his family settled, until they emigrated to the United States in 1941. Frank's undergraduate studies were at Swarthmore College, founded as a Quaker college from which he gained an Economics degree in 1950. The Communist International (Comintern), also known as the Third International, was a Soviet Union, Soviet-controlled international organization founded in 1919 that advocated world communism. Venona Project
The Venona project was a United States counterintelligence program initiated during World War II by the United States Army's Signal Intelligence Service (later absorbed by the National Security Agency), which ran from February 1, 1943, until October 1, 1980. It was intended to decrypt messages transmitted by the intelligence agencies of the Soviet Union (e.g. the NKVD, the KGB, and the GRU). Initiated when the Soviet Union was an ally of the US, the program continued during the Cold War, when the Soviet Union was considered an enemy. During the 37-year duration of the Venona project, the Signal Intelligence Service decrypted and translated approximately 3,000 messages. The signals intelligence yield included discovery of the Cambridge Five espionage ring in the United Kingdom and Soviet espionage of the Manhattan Project in the U.S. (known as Project Enormous).
