Mario Martone
Mario Martone (born 20 November 1959) is an Italian film director and screenwriter. He has directed more than 30 films since 1985. His film ''L'amore molesto'' was entered into the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. His 2010 film '' Noi credevamo'' competed for the Golden Lion at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. He was also the stage director for Lorenzo Ferrero's opera '' Charlotte Corday'', which was premiered at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma on 21 February 1989. His 2014 film '' Leopardi'' has been selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. ''Nostalgia'' is a 2022 Italian-French drama film co-written and directed by Mario Martone, based on a 2016 novel by Ermanno Rea. The film premiered in the official competition for Palme d'Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival on 24 May 2022. The following month, the film won four Nastro d'Argento Awards, for best director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best screenplay. Plot The film follows Felice, a man who returns to his hometown of Naples to visit his ill mother after spending 40 years living in Egypt, where he also converted to Islam, and married an Egyptian woman. Most of the film is set in the impoverished Rione Sanità area of Naples, where Felice first visits his mother and later meets local priest Don Luigi.
