Mario Cantu
Mauro Casiano Cantu, Jr. (April 2, 1937 – November 9, 2000) was a restaurant owner, Chicano activist, advocate and member of a Marxist–Leninist–Maoist Mexican guerrilla group, as well as a spokesman for human rights for Chicanos and Mexicans both in the US and in Mexico. Early history Cantu was the oldest of four children. Growing up, he worked at the family business, a small 24-hour grocery store on the West Side of San Antonio called the M. Cantu Super Mercado, which later became Mario’s restaurant. Today, the site is home to the University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus. However, in the early 1960s Cantu became involved in selling drugs, which led to his arrest during a heroin run to Monterrey, Mexico in 1963. After his arrest, Cantu spent six years in federal prison at Terre Haute, Indiana. During his time in prison, Puerto Rican nationalists influenced Cantu in becoming a radical Chicano activist. Chicano
Chicano or Chicana is a chosen identity for many Mexican Americans in the United States. The label ''Chicano'' is sometimes used interchangeably with ''Mexican American'', although the terms have different meanings. While Mexican-American identity was related to encouraging Cultural assimilation, assimilation into White Americans, White American society and separating the community from the African Americans, African-American political struggle, Chicano identity emerged among anti-assimilationist youth. Rodolfo Gonzales
Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales (June 18, 1928 – April 12, 2005) was a Mexican-American boxer, poet, political organizer, and activist. He was one of many leaders for the Crusade for Justice in Denver, Colorado. Chicano Nationalists
Chicano nationalism is the pro-indigenist ethnic nationalist ideology of Chicanos. While there were nationalistic aspects of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, the movement tended to emphasize civil rights and political and social inclusion rather than nationalism. For this reason, Chicano nationalism is better described as an ideology than as a political movement. Background Violence and discrimination against Mexican Americans (usually of lower class and visible Amerindian ancestry) continued into the 1950s and 1960s. Self-exile
Exile is primarily penal expulsion from one's native country, and secondarily expatriation or prolonged absence from one's homeland under either the compulsion of circumstance or the rigors of some high purpose. Usually persons and peoples suffer exile, but sometimes social entities like institutions (e.g. the papacy or a government in exile, government) are forced from their homeland. In Roman law, ''exsilium'' denoted both voluntary exile and banishment as a capital punishment alternative to death.
