Mariga, Nigeria
Mariga is a Local Government Area in Niger State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Bangi in the north of the area. Other towns in the LGA are Igwama and Inkwai. Various endangered Kamuku languages are spoken in Mariga LGA. It has an area of 5,552 km² and a population of 199,430 at the 2006 census. Mariga is the commercial nerve center of northern part of Niger State and is the second largest Local Government in the state. Mariga's economy is primarily based on agriculture and Trade. Agriculture mainly consists of maize, groundnuts and guinea corn production. Mariga is a market town for the surrounding area, and is home to traders specializing in the buying and selling of cattle, as well as major crop exporters. Niger State
Niger is a state in the North Central region of Nigeria and the largest state in the country. Niger state has three political zones, zone A,B and C. The state's capital is at Minna. Other major cities are Bida, Kontagora and Suleja. It was formed in 1976 when the then North-Western State was divided into Niger State and Sokoto State. It is home to Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, two of Nigeria's former military rulers. Kamuku Languages
The Kamuku languages are a branch of the Kainji languages spoken by the Kamuku people of Niger State, western Nigeria, mostly in Mariga and Rafi LGAs. Although formerly classified as Kamuku, Pongu is now placed in a related branch, the Pongu (Shiroro) languages, and Western Acipa (Cipu) with the Kambari languages. Kamuku People
The Kamuku are an ethnic group in central Nigeria. The Kamuku language belongs to the Kainji family and is related to C'lela, Duka, and Kambari. They mainly live in the west-central region of Nigeria, particularly in Kwara State. Their population in 1996 exceeded 35,000 people, found in the Sokoto division of Sokoto State, the Birnin Gwari division of Kaduna State and the Kontagora and Minna divisions of Niger State. The Kamuku may have been the dominant people of the kingdom of Kankuma (also Kwangoma or Kangoma), a people whom Al-Makrizi (d.1442) called Karuku in his book ''The Races of the Sudan''. One historian speculates that Kankuma may have been the precursor to the Hausa state of Zaria. Zugurma Game Reserve
The Zugurma Game Reserve is a section of the Kainji National Park, in the Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. It is bordered by the Kontagora River to the northwest and the Manyara River to the north, and covers an area of 138,500 hectares. It was amalgamated with the Borgu Game Reserve in 1975 to form the Kainji Lake National Park. The reserve consists of a low plateau with gradually sloping sides forming an east to west watershed. It is poorly drained, with no tributaries running into the Manyara River, and with the Yampere and Lanser rivers running only seasonally.
