Marie Cantacuzène
Marie Cantacuzène (20 July 1820 – 29 August 1898) was a Romanian princess and painter's model, and wife of the painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Biography Marie Cantacuzène was the eldest of the three children of Prince Nicholas Cantacuzène and Princess Pulcheria Sturdza. She received a Catholic education, and was fluent in French. At age 16 in 1836, she married Gheorghe Stratulat, a boyar, but the couple quickly separated. She then married her cousin, Alexandru Cantacuzino, who served as a minister in Romania. They separated, but never divorced. She was close friends with Nicolae Bălcescu and Vasile Alecsandri. From 1850, Cantacuzène lived with her father in Paris and Biarritz. In 1854, her brother introduced her to Théodore Chassériau, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship in the two years prior to painter's death. Théodore Chassériau
Théodore Chassériau (September 20, 1819 – October 8, 1856) was a Captaincy General of Santo Domingo, Dominican-born French Romanticism, Romantic Painting, painter noted for his portraits, historical and religious paintings, allegorical murals, and Orientalism, Orientalist images inspired by his travels to Algeria. Early in his career he painted in a Neoclassicism, Neoclassical style close to that of his teacher Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, but in his later works he was strongly influenced by the Romantic style of Eugène Delacroix. He was a prolific draftsman, and made a suite of prints to illustrate William Shakespeare, Shakespeare's ''Othello''. Cantacuzino Family
The House of Cantacuzino (french: Cantacuzène) is a Romanian aristocratic family of Greek origin. The family gave a number of princes to Wallachia and Moldavia, and it claimed descent from a branch of the Byzantine Kantakouzenos family, specifically from Byzantine Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos (reigned 1347–1354). After the Russo-Ottoman War of 1710–11, a lateral branch of the family settled in Russia, receiving the princely ('' Knyaz'', as opposed to ''Velikij Knyaz'') status. In 1944, Prince Ștefan Cantacuzino settled in Sweden, where his descendants form part of the unintroduced nobility of that country. Vasile Alecsandri
Vasile Alecsandri (; 21 July 182122 August 1890) was a Romanian patriot, poet, dramatist, politician and diplomat. He was one of the key figures during the 1848 revolutions in Moldavia and Wallachia. He fought for the unification of the Romanian Principalities, writing "Hora Unirii" in 1856 and giving up his candidacy for the title of prince of Moldavia, in favor of Alexandru Ioan Cuza. He became the first minister of foreign affairs of Romania and was one of the founding members of the Romanian Academy. Alecsandri was a prolific writer, contributing to Romanian literature with poetry, prose, several plays, and collections of Romanian folklore, being considered, alongside Mihai Eminescu, which admired and was inspired by the writings of Alecsandri, as one of the most important Romanian writers in the second half of the 19th century.
