Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annuziata (Church of the Holiest Mary of the Annunciation) is a Roman Catholic parish and minor basilica church located in the city of Comiso, in the province of Ragusa, Italy. The church is dedicated to the Marian devotion of the Virgin of the Annunciation. History A church at this site, dedicated to San Nicola of Bari, was the original mother church of the town, and dated to prior than the mid-15th century, when the title was switched in 1480 to Santa Maria delle Stelle, because this parish, serving the local Greek population, persisted in using eastern Greek orthodox liturgy. This original church was razed by the 1693 Sicily earthquake. It was rebuilt by 1772 in the same site, but re-dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Mario Rutelli (Palermo, Sicily, 4 April 1859 – 1941) was an Italian sculptor. Biography From a native British family which long ago moved from France to Italy (Rudelle at first), Mario's father Giovanni Rutelli was a prominent architect in Palermo. Mario studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo and then in Rome under Giulio Monteverde and Benedetto Civiletti, and Auguste Rodin in Paris. From 1874 through 1897 Giovanni Rutelli's firm, Rutelli and Machi', was responsible for the construction of the monumental Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the 3rd largest lyric theatre in all of Europe. Vito D'Anna (14 October 1718 – 13 October 1769) was an Italian painter, considered the most prominent painter of Palermitan rococo and one of the most important artists of Sicily. Biography He was the father of Alessandro D'Anna, the brother-in-law of Francesco Sozzi, and the son-in-law of Olivio Sozzi. He studied in Acireale under Pietro Paolo Vasta from 1736 to 1744, when he returned to Palermo. In Acireale, he had painted ''Portrait of the Provost Gambino''. Returning to Palermo, Vito married the daughter of the Catanese painter Olivio Sozzi. Sozzi helped arrange D'Anna to work with the circle of an aged Corrado Giaquinto in Rome. Mario Minniti (8 December 1577 – 22 November 1640) was an Italian artist active in Sicily after 1606. Born in Syracuse, Sicily, he arrived in Rome in 1593, where he became the friend, collaborator, and model of the key Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610). Carlo (or Carlino) Dolci (25 May 1616 – 17 January 1686) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Florence, known for highly finished religious pictures, often repeated in many versions. Biography He was born in Florence, on his mother's side the grandson of a painter. He was precocious and apprenticed at a young age to Jacopo Vignali, and when only eleven years of age he attempted a whole figure of St John, and a head of the infant Christ, which received some approbation. Giovanni Battista Vaccarini (3 February 1702 – 11 March 1768) was a Sicilians, Sicilian architect, notable for his work in the Sicilian Baroque style in his homeland during the period of massive rebuilding following the 1693 Sicily earthquake, earthquake of 1693. Many of his principal works can be found in the area in and around Catania. Biography Vaccarini was born in Palermo. 1693 Sicily Earthquake
The 1693 Sicily earthquake struck parts of southern Italy near Sicily, Calabria, and Malta on January 11 at around 21:00 local time. This earthquake was preceded by a damaging foreshock on January 9. The main quake had an estimated magnitude of 7.4 on the moment magnitude scale, the most powerful in Italian recorded history, and a maximum intensity of XI (''Extreme'') on the Mercalli intensity scale, destroying at least 70 towns and cities, seriously affecting an area of and causing the death of about 60,000 people. The earthquake was followed by tsunamis that devastated the coastal villages on the Ionian Sea and in the Straits of Messina. Almost two-thirds of the entire population of Catania were killed.
