Margaret Shelton (artist)
Margaret Dorothy Shelton (1915–1984) was a Canadian artist who lived nearly all of her life in Alberta. She worked in a number of mediums but is best known for her block printing. Biography Margaret Shelton was born August 15, 1915, in Bruce, Alberta. From 1933 to 1934 she attended the Normal School in Calgary eventually earning her teaching certificate and teaching for a brief time. She attended night and summer classes at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA) from 1934 through 1943. In 1938 she earned her MFA from the Banff School of Fine Arts. Shelton was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, the Calgary Sketch Club, the Canadian Society of Graphic Art, and the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers. She had major exhibitions at the Burnaby Art Gallery, British Columbia in 1981, and at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary in 1985. Shelton died in 1984 in Calgary. The Canadian Society of Graphic Art (CSGA), originally called the Graphic Arts Club, was a non-profit organization of Canadian graphic artists. It was founded in 1904, and formally chartered in 1933. At one time it was one of the larger organizations of Canadian artists. History The Society of Graphic Art, or Graphic Arts Club, was organized in 1904 by the members of the Toronto Art Student's League and the Mahl-stick Club. Charles William Jefferys was one of the founding members. In 1909 the Canadian National Exhibition granted the Society space at its annual fall fair. The Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (CPE) was a non-profit organization of Canadian etchers and engravers. History The Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers (CPE) was founded in 1916 as a successor to the short-lived Association of Canadian Etchers, founded in 1885. William W. Alexander was a founding member. He participated in the Society's exhibitions with bookplates based on his sketches and watercolors from northern canoe trips. The CPE was relatively conservative. It favored intaglio and insisted that the artist should be involved in each stage of production including drawing, engraving or etching, and printing the block or plate. The Burnaby Art Gallery (abbreviated as BAG) is an art museum in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. The museum is located on the northern periphery of Deer Lake Park, situated off of Deer Lake Avenue. The museum occupies Fairacres Mansion, a historic residence designated as a historic site by the provincial government. The institution was established through a private association in 1967, who used the publicly owned Fairacres Mansion to exhibit its collection. Glenbow Museum
The Glenbow Museum is an art and history regional museum in the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The museum focuses on Western Canadian history and culture, including Indigenous perspectives. The Glenbow was established as a private non-profit foundation in 1955 by lawyer, businessman and philanthropist Eric Lafferty Harvie with materials from his personal collection. The museum moved to its current facility in downtown Calgary in 1976, and is funded by the governments of Calgary, Alberta and Canada, private donors, as well as an endowment provided by Harvie. The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is an art museum in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The museum occupies a building at Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton. The museum building was originally designed by Donald G. Bittorf, and B.
