Margaret Bryan (philosopher)
Margaret Bryan (c. 1759 – 31 March 1836) was an English natural philosopher and educator and the author of three scientific textbooks. A pioneer of female education, she taught science to women and girls from her schools in Margate and London. The first 'Bryan House' school was in Margate, Kent above the yet-to-be-discovered Margate Caves, and the second was in Blackheath, London. Margaret also later offered private tuition from Cadogan Place in Chelsea. Her first known work was ''A Compendious System of Astronomy'' (1797), collecting her lectures on astronomy. She later published ''Lectures on Natural Philosophy'' (1806), a textbook on the fundamentals of physics and astronomy, and ''An'' ''Astronomical and Geographical Class Book for the Use of Schools and Private Families,'' a thin octavo, in 1815. William Nutter
William Nutter (c. 1759–1802) was an English engraver and draughtsman. Life Born about 1759, Nutter became a pupil of John Raphael Smith. He worked exclusively as a stipple engraver, in the style of Francesco Bartolozzi. Nutter exhibited some allegorical designs at the Royal Academy in 1782 and 1783. He died at his residence in Somers Town, 14 March 1802, in his 44th year, and was buried in the graveyard of Whitefield's Tabernacle, Tottenham Court Road. James Heath (19 April 1757 – 15 November 1834) was a British engraver. He enjoyed the patronage of George III and successive monarchs. Life and work Heath was born in Newgate, London, the son of George Heath, a bookbinder (d. 1773). He was articled to the engraver Joseph Collyer the younger, an exacting master who required steady application from his pupil - as a result, Heath acquired a great mechanical skill in his art. ''The Critical Review'' was a British publication appearing from 1756 to 1817. It was first edited by Tobias Smollett, from 1756 to 1763. Contributors included Samuel Johnson, David Hume, John Hunter, and Oliver Goldsmith. Early years The Edinburgh printer Archibald Hamilton started publishing ''The Critical Review'' in 1756 with Tobias Smollett as its first editor. The content was mainly book reviews, which were often long and favourable, with copious verbatim quotations. The Tory and High Church perspectives of contributors came through clearly, however. Besides Smollett, the writers of the first two volumes have been identified as John Armstrong, Samuel Derrick, Thomas Francklin, and Patrick Murdoch.
