Margaret Bischell McFadden
Margaret McFadden (, Bichsel, or Bischell, or Bischelt; 1870 – December 7, 1932) was an American community leader, prominent in philanthropic, church, and women's organizations. She served as president of the Minnesota Public Health Association, and the Guild of Catholic Women, the latter being one of the leading and most powerful religious organizations in the region where she lived. She was also involved in charitable work to improve the lives of veterans and the poor. Early life and education Margaret Bichsel (or Bischell, or Bischelt) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, 1870. Her father, Georg Bichsel, was an extensive shipbuilding, shipbuilder of St. Louis. Her mother, Elizabeth, born in Lorraine, France, 1831. When a child, she removed to Winona, Minnesota. She was a student in Arcadia, Wisconsin, and at the Winona Seminary, conducted by the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota, Sisters of Saint Francis. Community Chest (organization)
Community Chests, commonly referred to as community trusts, community foundations and united way organizations, are endowment funds pooled from a community for the purpose of charitable giving. The first Community Chest, "Community Fund", was founded in 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, by the Federation for Charity and Philanthropy. The number of Community Chest organizations increased from 39 to 353 between 1919 and 1929, and surpassed 1,000 by 1948. By 1963, and after several name changes, the term "United Way" was adopted in the United States, whereas the United Way/Centraide name was not adopted in Canada until 1973–74. The Community Chest was promoted on several old-time radio shows, including the H. J. Heinz Company–sponsored ''The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet'' show, the S. C. The Commission for Relief in Belgium or C.R.B. − known also as just Belgian Relief − was an international (predominantly American) organization that arranged for the supply of food to German-occupied Belgium and northern France during the First World War. Its leading figure was chairman, and future President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. Origins When the Great War broke out, Hoover was a mining engineer and financier living in London. When hostilities erupted, he found himself surrounded by tens of thousands of American tourists trying to get home.
