Václav Marek (5 March 190814 May 1994) was a Czechoslovak writer, traveller, publicist, researcher of Saami languages. Early life Václav Marek was born in Sadská in 1908 to parents Antonín Marek and Marie Mareková (b. Němečková). His father died in 1913, his mother in 1924. He studied in Poděbrady in an economic school in 1923−1924. After 2 years break he served as an apprentice in Studený, and then in a mill in Sadská, in order to help to feed his family. In the mill he lost his left hand in 1926. In 1928 he worked in Lomnice nad Popelkou for a while for architectural firms, then returned to his birth village, but he had no work. In 1929 he went abroad, visited 20 countries in Europe, where he started to write stories. His father, who travelled in Algeria, China or Vietnam, because he served in the French Legion between 1902 and 1906, also wrote stories. Tadeusz "Tadek" Marek (1908–1982) was a Polish automobile engineer, known for his Aston Martin engines. Marek was from Kraków and studied engineering at Technische Universität Berlin before working for Fiat in Poland and also for General Motors. Despite a serious racing accident in 1928, he raced the 1937 Monte Carlo Rally in a Fiat 1100 followed by a Lancia Aprilia in 1938 and an Opel Olympia in 1939. Driving a Chevrolet Master sedan, he won the XII Rally Poland (1939) before moving to Great Britain in 1940 to join the Polish Army. He joined the Centurion tank Meteor engine development (1944), but returned to Germany, working for United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. In 1949 he joined the Austin Motor Company, and eventually joined Aston Martin (1954). József Marek (; March 18, 1868 – September 2, 1952) was a Hungarian veterinarian and scientist. Marek is best known for his discovery of the poultry disease that would eventually bear his name, Marek's disease. In his lifetime, Marek was known for his studies into various veterinary diseases, and particularly for his co-authorship of a textbook of veterinary internal medicine, which was translated into multiple languages and remained in print for over fifty years. John Richard Marek (September 17, 1961 – August 19, 2009) was an American death row inmate at Florida State Prison for the rape and murder of a woman in 1983. Marek was executed on August 19, 2009. Kidnapping and murder On June 16, 1983, Adella Marie Simmons, a 45-year-old mother of two, and her Barry University co-worker Jean Trach were returning home from a holiday trip, when their car broke down on Florida's Turnpike in Broward County. John Marek and his accomplice Raymond Dewayne Wigley stopped and convinced Adella Marie Simmons to ride with them to a service station. They instead took her to a beach about 60 miles away, where she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, and then strangled with a bandana and burned. John Marek (born 24 December 1940) is a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wrexham from 1983 to 2001, and the Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for Wrexham from 1999 to 2007. A member of the Labour Party until 2003, he successfully stood for re-election to the Welsh Assembly as a John Marek Independent Party candidate.
