Marcus Weiss
Marcus Weiss (born 1961 in Basel, Switzerland) is a saxophonist and teacher. His repertoire includes all epochs, from the beginnings in impressionistic France to the present. As a soloist, Weiss worked with many European orchestras and ensembles of contemporary music. He has been invited to major festivals in Europe, the US and Asia. As a chamber musician, Weiss is primarily working with his two ensembles, Trio Accanto (Nicolas Hodges, piano and Christian Dierstein percussion) and Quatuor Xasax in Paris (with saxophonists Serge Bertocchi, Jean-Michel Goury and Pierre-Stéphane Meugé. Since 1995 he has taught saxophone and chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik Basel, where he also directs a Masters program for contemporary music. Gérard Buquet
Gérard Buquet (born 1954) is a tubist, conductor and composer, who was born in France. Life He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, and musicology at the Strasbourg University. Composition studies with Claude Ballif and Franco Donatoni. As instrumentalist he has participated in numerous premiers, and has appeared regularly as a soloist at all leading festivals for contemporary music. He has frequently played with the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, and the Orchestre Philharminique de Radio France, as well as various jazz groups. From 1976 to 2001 he was the tuba player of the ‘Ensemble Intercontemporain’. During this time he worked on several research projects at the Ircam Centre. Detlev Müller-Siemens
Detlev Müller-Siemens (born 30 July 1957) is a German composer and conductor. Life and career Born in Hamburg, Müller-Siemens began with piano lessons at age six and began composing. He was invited to a composition class at the Musikhochschule Köln at age 13. He studied piano, composition and theory at the Musikhochschule Hamburg from 1970 with Günter Friedrichs. From 1973 to 1980, he studied with György Ligeti. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris in 1977/78 with Olivier Messiaen. Manos Tsangaris
Manos Tsangaris (born 8 December 1956) is a German composer, musician, sound art installation and performance artist, and a poet. Life Born in Düsseldorf, Tsangaris studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln from 1976 to 1983 composition with Mauricio Kagel and percussion with Christoph Caskel, and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Alfonso Hüppi. Sakura-Variationen
''Sakura-Variationen'' (''Sakura Variations'') is a 2000 trio composition scored for saxophone, piano, and percussion by Helmut Lachenmann. It is written in the form of variations on a Japanese folk song about the cherry blossom called "Sakura Sakura". It was published by Breitkopf & Härtel. In 2008, Lachenmann expanded the work to ''Sakura mit Berliner Luft''. History Original version Lachenmann composed the work for a concert for children at the Kölner Philharmonie, given by Trio Accanto which at the time included his wife Yukiko Sugawara as pianist. He based the composition on a traditional Japanese folk song about the cherry blossom, "Sakura Sakura", and wrote variations for saxophone, piano and percussion. The composer writes that he takes children seriously, and therefore composed a piece that is cheerful and serious. Johannes Maria Staud (born 17 August 1974) is an Austrian composer. Biography Staud was born in Innsbruck and studied with, among others, Brian Ferneyhough and Michael Jarrell (at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna). In 1999/2000 Staud was fellow of the Alban Berg Foundation. He gained a publishing contract with Universal Edition in 2000. He was co-founder of the composers group ''Gegenklang'' in Vienna. Salvatore Sciarrino
Salvatore Sciarrino (born 4 April 1947) is an Italian composer of contemporary classical music. Described as "the best-known and most performed Italian composer" of the present day, his works include ''Quaderno di strada'' (2003) and ''La porta della legge'' (2006–08). Biography A native of Palermo, the young Sciarrino was attracted to the visual arts, but began experimenting with music when he was twelve. Though he had some lessons from Antonino Titone and Turi Belfiore, he is primarily self-taught as a composer. Hanspeter Kyburz
Hanspeter Kyburz (born 8 July 1960) is a contemporary Swiss composer of classical music, known for applying electronic music techniques to his productions. Career Kyburz was born in Lagos, Nigeria to Swiss parents. In 1980, he began studying music composition, first in Graz with A. Dobrowolsky and Gösta Neuwirth, then, from 1982–1990, with Gösta Neuwirth and Frank Michael Beyer at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, later with Hans Zender in Frankfurt. Toshio Hosokawa
is a Japanese composer of contemporary classical music. He studied in Germany but returned to Japan, finding a personal style inspired by classical Japanese music and culture. He has composed operas, the oratorio ''Voiceless Voice in Hiroshima'', and instrumental music. He was the cofounder and artistic director of a Japanese festival for contemporary music and has been a composer in residence at international festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Lucerne Festival, Warsaw Autumn and Rheingau Musik Festival.
