Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl Of Tyrone
Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone (16 July 1694 – 4 April 1763), known as Sir Marcus Beresford, 4th Baronet, until 1720 and subsequently as The Viscount Tyrone until 1746, was an Irish peer, freemason and politician. Background He was the only son of Sir Tristram Beresford, 3rd Baronet, and his wife Nichola Sophia Hamilton, youngest daughter of Hugh Hamilton, 1st Viscount of Glenawly and his second wife Susanna Balfour. In 1701 his father died and Beresford, aged only five, succeeded to the baronetcy. His guardian was The 3rd Viscount Dungannon (1669-1706). After Lord Dungannon's death in 1706, his widow (Beresford's maternal aunt), Arabella, Viscountess Dungannon, served as Beresford's guardian. Career In 1715, he entered the Irish House of Commons, sitting for Coleraine until 1720, when he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland with the titles Baron Beresford, of Beresford, in the County of Cavan, and Viscount Tyrone by King George I of Great Britain. Marcus Beresford (Dungarvan MP)
Marcus Beresford (14 February 1764 – 16 November 1797) was an Irish politician. Background A member of the Beresford family headed by the Marquess of Waterford, he was the eldest son of John Beresford. George Beresford and John Claudius Beresford were his younger brothers. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Political career Beresford was returned to the Irish House of Commons for Dungarvan in 1783, a seat he held until his death fourteen years later. Family Beresford married Frances Arabella, daughter of Joseph Leeson, 1st Earl of Milltown, in 1791. Brigadier-General Marcus Beresford (1 June 1764 – 6 January 1803) was an Irish soldier and Member of Parliament. On 31 October 1793, he was promoted to first major in the 102nd Regiment of Foot (Trench's) and on 26 November 1794 to lieutenant-colonel in the 135th Regiment of Foot ( Sir Vere Hunt's). General Marcus Beresford (28 July 1800 – 16 March 1876) was an officer of the British Army and politician in England. Early life Beresford was born on 28 July 1800 in Cork, Ireland. He was the second son of the Rev. George Beresford and his wife Susan Gorges. His grandfathers were Archbishop William Beresford, 1st Baron Decies and Hamilton Gorges MP, of Kilbrew. His great-uncle George Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford, had two illegitimate sons, William Carr Beresford, created Viscount Beresford in 1814, and Sir John Beresford, "both of whom influenced the course of his career." He was educated at Winchester College and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1815. Career He was Member of Parliament for Northallerton from 1824 to 1826. Marcus Gervais Beresford (14 February 1801 – 26 December 1885) was the Church of Ireland Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh from 1854 to 1862 and Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland from 1862 until his death. Early life Beresford was born in 1801 at the Custom House, Dublin, then the town house of his grandfather, John Beresford, a unionist Member of Parliament, and was a great-grandson of Marcus Beresford, 1st Earl of Tyrone. Colonel Francis Marcus Beresford (August 1818 – 1 August 1890) was a British Conservative Party politician Early life and education He was born at Aylestone, Leicestershire, the fourth son of Rev Gilbert Beresford and his wife Anne. He was educated at King's College School, and went into business as a wharfinger. Lord Marcus Talbot de la Poer Beresford, KCVO (25 December 1848 – 16 December 1922) was an equerry and racing manager. The son of the 4th Marquess of Waterford, he ran the stables of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales from 1890.
