Manuel A. Gonzalez
Manuel A. Gonzalez (November 24, 1832 – February 25, 1902), also known as "The Father of Fort Myers, Florida" was a 19th-century pioneer and steamship captain who founded Fort Myers, Florida on February 21, 1866. Biography Gonzalez left his home in Asturias Province, Spain in 1846 and traveled to America where he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in May 1859, in Key West, Florida. During the Seminole Indian War and American Civil War, Gonzalez assisted the Union Army by delivering mail and other supplies to troops stationed at a federal garrison in Southwest Florida known as Fort Myers. Following the Civil War, the U.S. Government abandoned Fort Myers. On February 21, 1866, Manuel A. Gonzalez and his 5-year-old son Manuel S. Gonzalez became the first permanent settlers of Fort Myers after arriving by boat from Key West, Florida at the remains of the abandoned federal garrison.
