Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Ronan Sheehan (dual Player)
Ronan Sheehan (born 1968) is an Irish former hurler, Gaelic footballer and politician. At club level he played with Mallow and Avondhu and was a member of the Cork senior teams as a dual player. Sheehan was also an elected representative with Cork County Council. Sporting career Sheehan first played Gaelic football and hurling with Thomas Davis, the underage section of the Mallow club. After winning the Cork MFC title in 1984, he subsequently progressed onto the club's top adult team in both codes and was part of the Mallow team that won the Cork IFC title in 1992. He also earned selection with Avondhu and was part of the divisional team that won the 1996 Cork SHC. Sheehan first appeared on the inter-county scene as a dual player at minor level and won Munster MFC and Munster MHC medals in 1985 and 1986 but lost three All-Ireland finals in that grade in the space of 12 months. Fergal McCormack
Fergal McCormack (born 17 December 1974) is an Irish hurling coach and former hurler. He played for North Cork club Mallow and was a member of the Cork senior hurling team for eight seasons, during which time he usually lined out at centre-forward. McCormack began his hurling career at club level with Mallow. He broke onto the club's top adult team as a 17-year-old in 1992 before later winning a Cork Under-21 Championship with the Mallow under-21 football team. McCormack made 57 championship appearances in three different grades of hurling for the club, while his early prowess also saw him selected for the Avondhu divisional team, with whom he won the Cork Senior Championship title in 1996. At inter-county level, Landers enjoyed an unsuccessful tenure with the Cork minor and under-21 teams before later winning an All-Ireland Championship with the junior team in 1994. James Loughrey
James Loughrey (born 10 September 1986) is a Gaelic footballer who plays as a right corner-back at senior level for the Cork county team. Born in Belfast, Loughrey was educated at Our Lady and St Patrick's College, Knock where he played basketball. He later joined the St Brigid's club, where he first played competitive Gaelic football. Loughrey won junior and intermediate championship medals with the club, before transferring to the Mallow club in 2013. He has also lined out with divisional side Avondhu. During his studies at Queen's University Belfast, Loughrey was a regular on the university's Gaelic football team. He won a Sigerson Cup medal as a member of the panel in 2007. Willie Clancy (hurler)
William John Clancy (17 June 1906 – 14 December 1967) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-forward for the Cork senior team. Born in Mallow, County Cork, Clancy first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he first linked up with the Cork senior team. He joined the senior panel during the 1928 championship. Clancy subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen, and won one All-Ireland medal, one Munster medal and one National Hurling League medal. Clancy was a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, however, he never won a Railway Cup medal. At club level Clancy enjoyed a lengthy career with Mallow. Throughout his career Clancy made 15 championship appearances. He retired from inter-county hurling following the conclusion of the 1934 championship. The North Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Synergy Fermoy Credit Union Junior Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Avondhu Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1926 for junior Gaelic football teams in the northern part of Cork. The series of games begin in April, with the championship culminating with the final in the autumn. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The North Cork Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Football Championship. Cork Under-21 Football Championship
The Cork Under-21 Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition in County Cork, Ireland for players under the age of 21. Clubs affiliated to Cork board compete to win this championship. All eight of the divisions in Cork organize their own championship. The divisional winners compete against each other to decide the county title. Trophy The winning team is presented with the Pádraig A. Ó Murchú Cup. This cup commemorates Patrick Aloyius "Weeshie" Murphy of Bere Island, who served the GAA for many years, both as a player and an administrator.
