Malezas
Malezas is a barrio in the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 1,072. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the combined population of Malezas barrio and Río Hondo barrio was 1,072. Mayagüez (, ) is a city and the eighth-largest municipality in Puerto Rico. It was founded as Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Mayagüez, and is also known as ''La Sultana del Oeste'' (The Sultaness of the West), ''Ciudad de las Aguas Puras'' (City of Pure Waters), or ''Ciudad del Mangó'' (Mango City). On April 6, 1894, the Spanish Crown granted it the formal title of ''Excelente Ciudad de Mayagüez'' (''Excellent City'' of Mayagüez). Mayagüez is located in the center of the western coast on the island of Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico, there are 78 municipalities and 902 municipio subdivisions made up of 827 barrios and 75 barrios-pueblo. There are also a number of subbarrios and communities. The following is a list of the 902 barrios, some of the subbarrios, including the 40 subbarrios of Santurce, which is a barrio of San Juan and a few communities (, on the U.S. Census) arranged in alphabetical order. The municipalities of Puerto Rico (Spanish: ''municipios de Puerto Rico'') are the second-level administrative divisions in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. There are 78 such administrative divisions covering all 78 incorporated towns and cities. Each municipality is led by a mayor and divided into barrios, third-level administrative divisions, though the latter are not vested with any political authority. Every municipality is governed as stated by the Autonomous Municipalities Act of 1991, which establishes that every municipality must have an elected strong mayor with a municipal legislature as the form of government.
