Malebranche (Divine Comedy)
The Malebranche (; "Evil Claws")Dorothy L. Sayers, ''Hell'': notes on Cantos XXI and XXII, Penguin, 1949, . are the demons in the ''Inferno'' of Dante's ''Divine Comedy'' who guard Bolgia Five of the Eighth Circle (Malebolge). They figure in Cantos XXI, XXII, and XXIII. Vulgar and quarrelsome, their duty is to force the corrupt politicians ( barrators) to stay under the surface of a boiling lake of pitch. In ''The Divine Comedy'' When Dante and Virgil meet them, the leader of the Malebranche, Malacoda ("Evil Tail"), assigns a troop to escort the poets safely to the next bridge. Many of the bridges were destroyed in the earthquake that happened at the death of Christ, which Malacoda describes, enabling the time this takes place to be calculated. The troop hook and torment one of the barrators (identified by early commentators as Ciampolo), who names some Italian grafters and then tricks the Malebranche in order to escape back into the pitch. Cagnazzo
Cagnazzo is one of the Malebranche (Divine Comedy), Malebranche in Dante Alighieri, Dante's ''Inferno (Dante), Inferno'', appearing in Cantos XXI, XXII and XXIII. In Italian, his name means "nasty dog." This meaning is later reinforced when Dante describes his "muzzle" (Italian: ''muso''; Canto XXII Verse 106). He is called by Malacoda, the leader of the Malebranche, to be part of the unrequested escort that is assigned to help Dante and Virgil find a bridge to cross after discovering that the most direct one has collapsed. The poets will discover later on that the bridge they are searching for does not exist. Podestà
Podestà (, English: Potestate, Podesta) was the name given to the holder of the highest civil office in the government of the cities of Central and Northern Italy during the Late Middle Ages. Sometimes, it meant the chief magistrate of a city state, the counterpart to similar positions in other cities that went by other names, e.g. ''rettori'' ("rectors"). Cante De' Gabrielli
Cante dei Gabrielli di Gubbio (c. 1260 – c. 1335) was an Italian nobleman and condottiero. Biography Cante was born in Gubbio to a powerful Guelph feudal family. He held several high offices as Podestà in a number of cities in Tuscany and Umbria (Florence, Pistoia, Siena, Lucca, Orvieto) and was lord of Gubbio, Cantiano and other castles. In 1317 he was appointed by Pope John XXII as Commander-in-Chief of the Church's army, at the head of which he defeated the Ghibellines at Assisi and Urbino, thus re-establishing the Pope's supremacy in central Italy. He is mostly famous for having exiled from Florence Dante Alighieri, the famous poet, while serving as Podestà of that city (1301–1302).
