Malaika (singer)
Malaika (born Malaika LeRae Sallard, January 2, 1972, in Seattle, Washington) also known under name Malaika Sallard Johnson, is a female African American dance singer from Seattle, Washington. During her short lived music career she recorded only one album entitled ''Sugar Time'', which managed two Top 5 hits on the US '' Billboard'' Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including her number #1 single, " Gotta Know (Your Name)" in 1993. Sallard is tied with another A&M recording artist, CeCe Peniston, who took her own chances by performing backup vocals on the Overweight Pooch's album record '' Female Preacher'' in 1991, originally intended for Malaika. ''Female Preacher'' is the debut, and to date the only album recorded by Tonya Davis, a US rapper better known as Overweight Pooch, which was released in 1991 on A&M Records. Although the record indicated that Pooch had some potential, her album didn't go far commercially. Three songs were issued on single including a promo release, "Hip House Party", initially also promoted on ''Jam Harder: The A&M Underground Dance Compilation'' in 1990. ''Finally'' is the debut album by American singer CeCe Peniston, released on January 30, 1992 by A&M Records. Prior to the release of this album, Peniston released her debut single "Finally", which topped the US ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Music Club Play chart on October 26, 1991, peaking eventually at number five on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and at number two in the UK Singles Chart. The album yielded two additional singles which achieved dance number one status in the US; "We Got a Love Thang", co-written by Chantay Savage, and " Keep On Walkin'", written in collaboration with Kym Sims. The Canadian dance chart was first known to be published on November 13, 1976 by ''RPM'' magazine under the name ''Top 30 Disco Playlist''. The song which held the number-one spot on this first chart was "Keep It Comin' Love / I'm Your Boogie Man" by KC and the Sunshine Band. No chart was published from January 1980 until September 3, 1988.
