State Route 27 (abbreviated SR 27) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, running from the village of Newagen in Southport at SR 238 to the Coburn Gore-Woburn Border Crossing, where it continues into Quebec as Route 161. SR 27 passes through the major cities, towns, and villages of Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset, Gardiner, Augusta, the Belgrade Lakes Region, Farmington, Kingfield, and Eustis. Route description SR 27 begins at SR 238 in Southport and heads northeast to the town of Boothbay Harbor. It intersects SR 96, then heads north to the town of Edgecomb to US 1, where it turns left along US 1 heading into the town of Wiscasset. Southport is a town and archipelago in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 622 at the 2020 census. It includes the villages of Capitol Island, Hendricks Harbor, Newagen, Pine Cliff, Squirrel Island, and West Southport. The majority of the town's residents live on its main island, Southport Island. History The Abenaki people that originally inhabited the island called it Capanewagen. State Route 194 (SR 194) is a numbered state highway in the U.S. state of Maine. The route runs from an intersection with SR 27 in Pittston to an intersection with SR 215 in North Newcastle, a village of Newcastle. The state route has one major junction with SR 218 in the town of Whitefield. History SR 194 was designated in 1925 and originally ran from New England Interstate Route 24 (now U.S. Route 1) in Easton, a town in Aroostook County, and the Canadian border. In the 1930s, SR 194 was decommissioned, and the border crossing became one of the few in Maine to not have an assigned route number. After the original route was decommissioned, SR 194 was assigned to a short road located entirely in the town of Rockport. Dresden is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States, that was incorporated in 1794. The population was 1,725 at the 2020 census. History The town was originally settled in 1752 under the name Frankfort by French and German Huguenots, who were part of the first wave of French-speaking immigrants to arrive in Maine, but were distinguished from later arrivals by their Protestant faith. William Shirley built Fort Shirley in the community at the same time Fort Halifax (Maine) was built.
