Maine State Route 194
State Route 194 (SR 194) is a numbered state highway in the U.S. state of Maine. The route runs from an intersection with SR 27 in Pittston to an intersection with SR 215 in North Newcastle, a village of Newcastle. The state route has one major junction with SR 218 in the town of Whitefield. History SR 194 was designated in 1925 and originally ran from New England Interstate Route 24 (now U.S. Route 1) in Easton, a town in Aroostook County, and the Canadian border. In the 1930s, SR 194 was decommissioned, and the border crossing became one of the few in Maine to not have an assigned route number. After the original route was decommissioned, SR 194 was assigned to a short road located entirely in the town of Rockport. In 1948, SR 194 was decommissioned again when the road was designated part of the new SR 90. SR 194 was assigned to its current alignment in 1951. Rockport is a town in Knox County, Maine, United States. It is thirty-five miles southeast of Augusta. The population was 3,644 at the 2020 census. Rockport is a popular tourist destination and art colony. History Rockport, or "the River", was settled in 1769 by Robert Thorndike. Goose River Village (as it was known until 1852) was originally part of the Megunticook Plantation, incorporated in 1791 as Camden. Shipbuilding, ice harvesting and the manufacture of lime were important early industries. Easton, Maine
Easton is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,320 at the 2020 census. History In 1851, the first known residence in the Easton wilderness was built by Henry Wilson, who had taught school in Presque Isle. When Solomon Bolster arrived in 1854, he joined Henry Wilson and Augustus Rackliffe, its sole residents. In 1855–1856, Noah Barker partitioned the township into 142 lots of 160 acres in size, thereby determining its layout. The state opened it for settlement and, on July 26, 1856, it was organized as the Fremont Plantation. A schoolhouse was built in 1858 and the first of several lumber mills was constructed in another year. By 1860, the population was 320. Growth of the population slowed during the Civil War, and the town of Easton was incorporated 1865. The routes were marked by a yellow rectangular sign with black numbers and border. Many signs were painted on telephone poles. The routes were approved by the highway departments of the six New England states in April 1922. State Route 215 (SR 215) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maine. It runs for about between Newcastle at U.S. Route 1 Business (US 1 Bus.) and Jefferson at SR 32, entirely in Lincoln County.
