Maine State Route 174
State Route 174 (SR 174) is a road from U.S. Route 1A (US 1A) to US 1/ SR 3. For the entire length, SR 174 is named Fort Knox Road. The entire route is in Prospect, Waldo County. Route description SR 174 begins at the intersection of US 1A (Bangor Road) and Hawes Bridge Road in the town center of Prospect. It heads east descending a small hill and crosses a railroad and marshland containing Carley Brook (just south of the South Branch Marsh River confluence). The road then ascends another hill and heads through a mostly wooded area with houses lining the road. It intersects Blanket Lane and Bowden Point Road before curving to the southeast and intersecting Shore Road. SR 174 now begins to closely parallel the Penobscot River, but at a higher elevation than the water surface. After Ferry Road, the road curves to the south at the entrance of Fort Knox. Prospect, Maine
Prospect is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 698 at the 2020 census. The most prominent landmark in Prospect is Fort Knox, a large 19th-century fort. It is now a major tourist attraction, as is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. History Originally part of Frankfort, it was settled in 1759 when Fort Pownall was completed at Fort Point on Cape Jellison. Prospect was set off and incorporated in 1794. Land was then set off from Prospect in 1845 to form part of Searsport. Stockton (later Stockton Springs) was set off and incorporated in 1857. Shipbuilding was an early industry. By 1859, the town had one gristmill, three sawmills and a shingle mill. Construction on Fort Knox began in 1844, using granite from Mount Waldo in Frankfort. It was built to defend the Penobscot River and the lumber port of Bangor during the Aroostook War. Although never fully completed, work on the huge defense stopped in 1869. Geography According t ... Maine State Route 3
State Route 3 (SR 3) is a state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast. The western terminus is at SR 8, SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert. Major cities and towns along the length of SR 3 include Augusta, Belfast, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor. Route description SR 3 begins at Civic Center Drive ( SR 8/ SR 11/ SR 27) in the northwest corner of Augusta. SR 3 heads east using the Augusta Bypass, a controlled-access road completed in 2004 to alleviate congestion in the city center caused by traffic headed to and from I-95. The bypass ends at North Belfast Avenue (US 202/ SR 9) on the east end of Augusta. SR 3 runs concurrently with US 202 and SR 9 (the Belfast Road) to the village of South China, where US 202 and SR 9 split to the north.
