Maine State Route 174
State Route 174 (SR 174) is a road from U.S. Route 1A (US 1A) to US 1/ SR 3. For the entire length, SR 174 is named Fort Knox Road. The entire route is in Prospect, Waldo County. Route description SR 174 begins at the intersection of US 1A (Bangor Road) and Hawes Bridge Road in the town center of Prospect. It heads east descending a small hill and crosses a railroad and marshland containing Carley Brook (just south of the South Branch Marsh River confluence). The road then ascends another hill and heads through a mostly wooded area with houses lining the road. It intersects Blanket Lane and Bowden Point Road before curving to the southeast and intersecting Shore Road. SR 174 now begins to closely parallel the Penobscot River, but at a higher elevation than the water surface. After Ferry Road, the road curves to the south at the entrance of Fort Knox. Prospect, Maine
Prospect is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 698 at the 2020 census. The most prominent landmark in Prospect is Fort Knox, a large 19th-century fort. It is now a major tourist attraction, as is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. History Originally part of Frankfort, it was settled in 1759 when Fort Pownall was completed at Fort Point on Cape Jellison. Prospect was set off and incorporated in 1794. Land was then set off from Prospect in 1845 to form part of Searsport. Stockton (later Stockton Springs) was set off and incorporated in 1857. Shipbuilding was an early industry. By 1859, the town had one gristmill, three sawmills and a shingle mill. Construction on Fort Knox began in 1844, using granite from Mount Waldo in Frankfort. Maine State Route 3
State Route 3 (SR 3) is a state highway located in southern Maine. It is a major interregional highway, connecting the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic coast. The western terminus is at SR 8, SR 11 and SR 27 in Augusta and the eastern terminus is at SR 102 and SR 198 in Mount Desert. Major cities and towns along the length of SR 3 include Augusta, Belfast, Ellsworth, and Bar Harbor. Fort Knox (Maine)
Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about from the mouth of the river. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built entirely of granite; most previous forts used wood, earth, and stone. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston. As a virtually intact example of a mid-19th century granite coastal fortification, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and declared a National Historic Landmark on December 30, 1970. Waldo–Hancock Bridge
The Waldo–Hancock Bridge was the first long-span suspension bridge erected in Maine, as well as the first permanent bridge across the Penobscot River downstream from Bangor. The name comes from connecting Waldo and Hancock counties. The bridge was built in 1931 and retired in 2006, when the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge was opened just a few yards away, and it was demolished in 2013. The bridge was long with a clear center span of between towers. It had two side spans and carried a wide roadway with two sidewalks. It used stiffening trusses that are deep. Each of the main catenary cables were in diameter, and consisted of 37 strands of 37 wires. The deck was above water level to allow passage of large ships. Penobscot Narrows Bridge
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that carries US 1/ SR 3 over the Penobscot River. It connects Verona Island to Prospect, in the U.S. state of Maine. It opened in December 2006, replacing the Waldo–Hancock Bridge, built in 1931. Technical information The Penobscot Narrows Bridge is one of three bridges in the US (the others being the Zakim Bridge in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Veterans' Glass City Skyway in Toledo, Ohio) constructed recently using a cradle system that carries the strands within the stays from bridge deck to bridge deck, as a continuous element, eliminating anchorages in the pylons.
