State Route 139 (SR 139) is a state highway traveling from U.S. Route 2 (US 2) and US 201 in Norridgewock at its western terminus to US 1A in Winterport at its eastern terminus. Route description SR 139 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 201A, U.S. Route 2, and SR 8 in Norridgewock. The intersection of SR 139 and U.S. Route 2 is notorious for being one of the most dangerous intersections in central Maine. SR 139 then heads south and joins SR 104 for a 2.78 mile concurrency, during which it intersects with SR 23, followed by an interchange with Interstate 95. The section of SR 139 between U.S. Route 2 in Norridgewock and Interstate 95 in Fairfield is often used as a bypass of U.S Route 2 through Skowhegan. Winterport, Maine
Winterport is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,817 at the 2020 census. The Winterport Historic District, extending several blocks along Main Street (United States Route 1A), was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. History First settled in 1766 as part of Frankfort, it was set off and incorporated on March 12, 1860. It was named Winterport because of its fine harbor on the Penobscot River estuary, which generally remained ice free, and so became a busy local terminus for trade and shipping during winter months. When the upper Penobscot River froze, commodities like flour were hauled in large quantities from here to Bangor. In 1841, Theophilus Cushing opened a large steam mill which manufactured 11,000,000 feet of lumber annually. It also made sugar box shooks, lath, clapboard, and soap and candle boxes. Interstate 95 In Maine
Interstate 95 (I-95) in the US state of Maine is a highway running from the New Hampshire state line in Kittery, to the Canadian border in Houlton. It is the only two-digit Interstate Highway in Maine. In 2004, the highway's route between Portland and Gardiner was changed so that it encompasses the entire Maine Turnpike (including the former I-495 between Falmouth and Gardiner), a toll road running from Kittery to Augusta.
