Maine State Route 203
State Route 203 (SR 203) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, located in Waldo County. The route is long and runs from SR 131 in Waldo, to SR 139 in Brooks. It is the only state-numbered highway in Maine entirely locally maintained. Route description SR 203 begins at an intersection with SR 131 in Waldo, southwest of the town center at an intersection named Neals Corner. It heads north along Pond Road heading through a wooded area with no houses or other structures only passing under a set of power lines. About later, the road enters the town of Brooks and the road name changes to Lang Hill Highway. Though the road is still within a mostly wooded area, some farms and houses begin to line the road. It makes some curves towards the east as it passes around Lake Passagassawakeag, the source of the Passagassawakeag River. Waldo, Maine
Waldo is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 795 at the 2020 census. It is the home town of Heather Hemmens, who is known for her role on Hellcats. History The area was once part of the Waldo Patent, a large tract of land owned by Brigadier-General Samuel Waldo of Boston. It was first settled in 1811 by Henry Davidson, then organized as Waldo Plantation on July 6, 1821. The town was incorporated by the legislature on March 17, 1845, taking the name of its early proprietor. A large portion of Waldo was rocky and uneven, unfit for cultivation. Some parts had arable soil, however, producing excellent farms and prosperous farmers. The town became noted for prize-winning cattle. It was also known for its forests, with much of the timber used for Belfast shipbuilding. The Wescott Stream provided water power, and by 1859 Waldo had seven busy sawmills. Brooks is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,010 at the 2020 census. The town was incorporated on December 10, 1816 and was named after John Brooks, the Federalist candidate for Governor of Massachusetts in 1815–1816, when the town incorporated. The town of Dexter, which incorporated the same year, was named after the opposing candidate Samuel Dexter. It was during Gov. Brooks' administration that Maine ceased to be a territory of Massachusetts and became a state. State Route 139 (SR 139) is a state highway traveling from U.S. Route 2 (US 2) and US 201 in Norridgewock at its western terminus to US 1A in Winterport at its eastern terminus. Route description SR 139 begins at an intersection with U.S. Route 201A, U.S. Route 2, and SR 8 in Norridgewock. The intersection of SR 139 and U.S. Route 2 is notorious for being one of the most dangerous intersections in central Maine. SR 139 then heads south and joins SR 104 for a 2.78 mile concurrency, during which it intersects with SR 23, followed by an interchange with Interstate 95. The section of SR 139 between U.S. Route 2 in Norridgewock and Interstate 95 in Fairfield is often used as a bypass of U.S Route 2 through Skowhegan.
